(small ones though, piston-singles, not $6 million dollar turboprops)

The only reason the little airplanes are faster is because we go in a staright line (no turns, no traffic lights, no speed limits), the air gets less dense the higher you go so less drag, and the power weight is closer to that of a motorcycle since the airplane is only 1500-1800lbs empty.

RIP. Guess I imagined them to be somehow bigger and better. I don't know anything about airplane motors except I read once that rotary engines were common. Iirc old WW2 planes seemed to have quite a few exhaust pipes but maybe modern technology made that style of engine obsolete. Or the lack of need for that level of performance

Airplanes are great for their shape, it's the way they manipulate fluid dynamics. They don't even need the engine to fly. (Only to climb, the ability of an airplane to climb is excess HP). All airplanes glide, some better than others, but even a typical piston-single I can go 10 miles for every mile I'm up to find a place before I have to land with a dead engine.

The PT6A out of the airplanes I fly for work would a bit peppier... but they wouldn't fit really unless you sat next to it or something.

Welp, back in my drag racing days, this was the machine to watch ......

Yep, back in the 50's, a couple of good ol boys (Walt & Art Arfons) from Akron, Ohio, pulled an engine out of a P-51 Mustang fighter and set it on a dragster frame.

That's when they found out that the shutdown area of Kilkare drag strip in Dayton, OH was getting too short.

Yep, I was there one night and watched the "green monster" disappear into the woods .....
