Update 3:

Dropped the 86 at the shop yesterday for repair. In the walk-around found some additional damage. Looks like the front quarter panel has some paint chipping due to either the shock from the impact or some other vibration as there is no body damage.

The hood is definitely shifted towards the passenger side slightly, but it's almost even all along the length (maybe an 1/8" to a 1/3" off center) which is odd as there is no apparent damage to the hood or the hinges. It was NOT like that before, I've looked at photos. I can read the engine compartment VIN (about halfway up the hood) through the gap its so wide.

Anyway, we will see when they pull it apart.

Still hoping I need a new hood but doesn't seem likely.

Either way I'm getting an estimate on a respray since they'll have it off. The shop may not be willing to do it though because it has a slight rock dent on the passenger side (they had to point it out to me) and they won't paint it with that, but they also won't repair the aluminum hood.

They can't pop the dent or fill it? What kind of body shop is this?

I haven't talked to them about popping it (I think it could be done, pretty small) but I wouldn't want them to fill it. The hood flexes too much in my opinion for that to be effective.

In the end, it isn't a real high priority for me.

Update 4:

Well, as often happens once you look underneath there was more to it than appears. The impact bar and other structure underneath the cover took a hit. The list of parts to be replaced or repaired are:

Bumper Cover
Absorber
Impact Bar
LT Corner Support
LT Headlamp Assembly
Radiator Support
LT Fender (basically paint right around the bumper cover/headlight, no real repair)

as well as removing, inspecting, adjusting all the associated parts and pieces.

Should be ready within the next couple of days, was in paint as of this AM. I'm hoping to get photos of the "behind the cover" damage from the shop as they were going to be moving forward before I could get there to see it and didn't want to hold up the work.

Update Five:

Here are some photos of the damage once the bumper cover was off. The Bumper bar was bent, and the fender was pushed in slightly, causing the gap I was seeing in the hood. "Fortunately" no hood damage, so I didn't get a new one.

Update Final:

I did pick the car up today, she's all done and pretty, well except for the paint chips which were not corrected, and still stick out like a sore thumb, probably time to get some touch up paint.

Anyway the shop did a great job of matching up the paint and feathering it in, I can't tell any difference other than the bumper cover is clean and smooth, not like it had 100,000 miles on it.

Now to deal with the person who hit me, but hasn't called her insurance company yet to admit fault.

Update Final Pt 2:

Had an amusing conversation with the insurance company today. Since the car was under 100,000 miles it qualified for a review for Diminished Value. I thought, OK I'll play. Completed the form, submitted it and on Saturday received my diminished value pay out for $3.54!

I think I might buy the car an air freshener with my vast gains!

100,000 Miles!

Reached the 100,000 milestone on 2/25 on a road trip, but while sitting in a traffic jam on I-75. Picture below.

So, now that this milestone has been reached time to check it off the list of things I've been periodically posting here. Interesting that based on miles driven, my projection for when I would reach 100,000 has been for the last two years (5/11/2015 and 5/11/2016) 2/28/2017. Not too far off, and shows what a creature of habit I am that the math works out that close.

Some stats for the first 100,000 miles.

Days of Ownership: 1,751
Average Miles per day: 57
Lowest/Highest/Average Fuel Mileage: 27.60/36.67/32.93
Number of tanks of fuel: 293
Price per Mile (fuel only): $0.10
Fuel Cost (Lowest/Hightest/Avg per gal): $1.89/$4.25/$3.14

Once Around The Earth........24,901.... 9/4/2013 Complete!
Warranty...........................32,000....1/6/2014 Complete!
PowerTrain.........................60,000....3/30/2015 Complete!
......................................100,000....2/25/2017 Complete!
......................................200,000....1 2/19/2021
Distance to the Moon.........238,857....10/31/2023
Astro Miles .......................289,000....3/29/2026
Goal................................300,000.... 10/8/2026

Happy Fifth Anniverary to Me!

Can't believe it's already here! May 9th is the fifth anniversary of me picking up my 86 from the dealer.

Doing the update now because I'm in an all-day conference on the actual date and will not have time.

As mentioned a couple of postings up, I've updated the original post here with the last of the single tank fill-ups and will discontinue that practice here. Basically, I think 304 fill-ups and 104,000 miles should give anyone that wants to know what the car does in terms of day-to-day driving.

Bottom line, I've averaged 33MPG and saved about $6,000 in fuel costs over my previous car. All that while making zero attempt to do anything that would look like hypermiling. Not bad.

I've averaged 57 miles per day (actual driving days would be higher as I only drive it a few miles on the weekend and have gone as much as two weeks not driving it at all due to vacations, time in the shop for recent body repairs, etc).

Other than the repair from the fender bender chronicled above there has been no shop time that was not maintenance related.

I have no plans at this point to switch to another car as my DD. Still hoping to get at least 200,000 miles (if not 300,000) out of it.

The progress towards some of my "goals" with the car in terms of miles driven hasn't changed much, in fact hasn't changed at all in over a year, showing I drive a very consistent amount.

After 112,000 miles I just had to replace my low beam bulbs. Oddly enough, this is the first time in all my years of driving I was actually driving the car when the bulb gave up the ghost. Usually its one of those things where I notice it in the rear of someone's car some day and don't really know when it happened.

Unfortunately I had to go with what I could get today since I drive quite a bit at night this time of year. So I replaced them with Sylvania H11 Silverstar Ultras. Easy replacement (took me longer to find a glove than it did to actually change them). I can definitely tell a difference in the lighting.

I had considered going the LED route, but since I needed them today, it wasn't really an option, plus all the ones I see online seem sketchy at best.

It was the passenger side that burned out although I replaced both. Maybe its just my luck but I can't recall a single time that the driver's side light has burned out on me first.

I only use the HIDs on dark roads. Most of the time the stock LED running lights are bright enough for me.

I am the opposite. I never recall a passenger light going first.

2013s don't have HIDs, they are halogen bulbs.

Been a while so I'll post this here.

The building I work in is basically in the middle of a construction zone that looks like someone dropped a MOAB on top of us and our building somehow magically survived. In fact, the parking spot I normally use right outside my office window and less than 30 feet from my office chair no longer exists and is a Georgia red clay mess.

To accommodate us during the construction our company is leasing parking space next door at another large company in the area. They agreed but they have assigned parking in the area we are now using so we were assigned individual spots in the employee parking lot. They were randomly assigned by the other company's security. This is my parking spot. I'm grateful for the curbside spot, but more importantly the number made me smile and think maybe I should buy a lottery ticket.
