looks repaired. could have been done at the port. there is no seam there from the factory on the uniside that would cause it to rust/blister like that. now, there would be a seam/backing plate right around that spot from a replacement quarter panel. I have done a few here so im very familiar with it

Got on here for a few minutes before I go to work and read the posts.

I guess the first picture looks like its just a crack in the paint with surface rust, but I can press down on one side or the other of the crack and push the metal up and down.

As long as I've owned the car I have not had anyone close the door on anything to my knowledge.

Ill have to wait and hear what they say on Monday.

I'm sorry about this, but that surely looks to me like the car has a replacement rear fender following a crash. That is where they would have joined the fender to the rocker panel. There is not a join in the panel in that area from the factory. The whole side of the car, including the A pillar, B pillar, rocker panel and rear fender is stamped from one sheet.

I think corrosion has got into the welded repair and is pushing the paint and bondo out. If it moves around when you push it, perhaps it's not even welded? Take a look at the lip under the rocker panel, you may see the join?

Get a magnet and run it over that area, if it doesn't stick in that area that may be body filler. Also crawl under the car and look. There would be an indication of repair i.e. spray on undercoating, primer etc.

I looked the other day before posting this and there was no seam under the rocker where they would have done this. Carfax was clean with no accidents before I purchased it. (since then I have been hit twice by uninsured drivers..... Front and then more recently the rear quarter on the drivers side, which I have not fixed yet.)

I did check with a magnet for body filler but it stuck all the way up and down the rocker.

This morning I took the rear rubber flaps off and checked behind them, the drivers side is dry and the passengers is wet. Its looks hollow all the way down the rocker, couldn't find a flash light that I could see down the rocker while shining the light in it.

An incident at the port wouldn't show up on a carfax report. I would bet an incident at the dealer that got handled in-house wouldn't show up either.

Detailers use a paint thickness meter to detect the condition of a vehicle's paint - spot re-sprays, etc. They're a little expensive for one-time personal use, but see if you can find a detail shop that would be willing to check this for you. If the paint is 3x as thick on the passenger side vs. the driver's side then there was an undisclosed repair at some point.

In my other car (also a uni-body) that is called the "longeron" and it takes almost all of the load on the car.
Any chance the car was accidentally taken off-roading, been "mowing the weeds" at the track, ever been stolen or joyridden when you were not present?

In any case it does not look like your run-of-the-mill random body corrosion.

Exactly my first thought!
That panel buckled from damage.

You can get into the inner side of the rear fender and rocker panel from inside the car. Simply remove the inner trim panel next to the rear seats and you'll be in.

Actually, there are many "accidents" that never show up on CarFax (and similar services). If there was no police report and/or no insurance claim, there will be record on CarFax. And even many accidents reported to police, or claimed on insurance, will never show up on CarFax.

How much do you want to bet they say "There is clearly damage to that panel - NOT covered under warranty"?
I can see the ripples in the pictures.

I think the "ripples" in the picture is just the picture. There are no ripples on the panel.

Also I was hit both times at less than 5mph, not enough to buckle a panel. The first one someone backed into me at a stop light and the other someone hit her while she was parked at work.

If you say so, but these sure look like underlying damage to me:

When I do bodywork, it is all about looking at the reflections.
You have waves in the paint that are damage, or previous body work, or what ever is being reflected in the paint is not straight....

Looks like a fair amount of force buckled those panels, is it possible a 5mph collision in the right spot could cause those? It looks really really beat up, especially for a panel with so many bends/curves that would really make it stronger than a completely flat panel
