This is when building a car is no longer fun. Build it for yourself, not for some company that only looks at you as $$$.

OP: Dear Roger Penske,

I've just driven my dad's Camry from Chicago to L.A. in under 18 hours. Can I drive one of your cars in either the Indy 500 or Daytona 500?

Thanks in advance,

OP

I was interested in sponsorships when I was younger for paintball. Most of the people are correct, it depends on presentation. However, if you don't deliver, you won't get certain aspects from the sponsor.

Say you want an exhaust from HKS. They're not just going to give it to you for posting a review on the item. Anyone can do that. The best way is to use it practically. Do some semi-pro races, place in a show, etc. GET NOTICED.

Another way is to start small (I mean with small companies/businesses). Contact local sponsors or shops, build reputations. This will help open doors to the bigger names.

In the end, it would be more of a life decision than a side hobby if you really want to see any huge results. If you want to slowly upgrade your car, you can see results in a couple years. I don't know if this helped you, but I would hope it provided a little bit of clarity. If anyone wants to elaborate or counter my thoughts, please do. I would like to know for myself.

You're going to have to put money into the car before you can start to get sponsors. You're going to have to be able to win shows and races. Show them what your car is capable of. Your plans for the car.

Most companies will need a proposal of some type, so present your build like a resume. Keep in mind all companies will ask you to do things, so make sure you're up for it. Some will ask you to attend a certain amount of shows and send quarterly updated high res pictures of the build.

Almost all will ask if you are being featured in a magazine any time soon.

Also, if you're not a shop or race team, forget about getting anything for free. They'll give you a discount though.. Just depends on what level of sponsorship they think you would fall into.

Anyways, this vid explains it well for sponsorship.

Or, just pick up a simple book about marketing and go from there. Sponsorship is no different than buying out a magazine advertisement or placing a billboard ad. The more views you can guarantee, the better your chances are of getting free parts, assuming that's your goal.

So far reading through everything Mav's post has certainly been the most accurate. I get emails all the time from guys who write four sentences saying "Hey I have a 2013 blah blah, and I think you guys are really cool, so if I put a sticker on my car can you give me free parts?" No, doesn't work like that, nor do vendors normally sponsor cars, 99% of the time it's manufacturers.

I've been lucky enough to now pick up four sponsors on my build, not including one deal which technically wasn't a sponsorship it was a developmental deal on the car for testing that I got a deal on but that doesn't really count since there's no real contract that was signed. For the sponsorships the #1 thing they want to see is how may car shows you are registered for and plan on going to. If you're not going to compete in car shows, then there's no intensive for them to invest in you. If you can show them that you can be a brand ambassador at these car shows when showing your car, then there's no benefit that you will give to these manufacturers.

If you can show these companies that what you can do will improve their sales, which is what they expect, and if this is your FIRST time modifying a car in this way to try to attract sponsors, you'll likely only pick up a partial sponsorship which is what happens 99% of the time. Partial sponsorships usually will cover a certain percentage of the cost of the item, but not all of it. Once you wow these manufacturers, usually a contract is signed which states you need to go to x amount of shows, or x amount of press events.

Good luck out there, but the best thing I can really say to try to get sponsored is to have a vision for the entire car first before you decide to start emailing every company out there. A lot of these manufacturers despite being competitors do talk to each other, so if someone gets a whiff that you have a want to just get free parts and you don't care from where, they likely wont touch it.

This is suppost to be a forum with posting rules. How can a moderator allow trolling?

Really you not helping a member if your trolling them that's part of the forums rules right?

I quote the FT86Club: Respect. By far the most important rule here.

Then after making you post #20 come back on the forum and talk about what's been said on facebook.

You should be setting the example as one of the forum's leaders.

Where did I break forum rule? Where in the forum rule states "No trolling"? I understand that "respect" is most important part of forum. I didn't say, it's okay to full on insult the members, did I?

I'm not helping members out? You're right, I'm not. That's why I've posted that comment AFTER warning members actually broke the rules.

If you really like, I can go on hardcore deleting ANY troll that happens here. Do you want me to do that? I gonna be a bit busy cleaning up member classified section for an hr or so, but after that, I can spent rest of the night reading at least 500 pages to find, delete, yellow/red cards all the members that posted trolls.

...but reality is, some ppl can handle troll. Some ppl can't. If they can't, they report saying that post is offense/rude post. We, mods look at those reports & delete it if necessary. Til then, we try not to get in the middle of it, well at least I don't. If you believe, What I'm saying is total BS & I should be better example, sorry, I'm still a human & sometimes bad side gets to me. I try to abide the forum rules & have a fun at the same time, that's all.

As for the FB comment, next day, scrolling through my FB page & saw that post. Did I take it to the heart? Nope! Why? They're there to troll here & there, I can take it. It gave me good giggle out of it, laugh it off and moved on. Btw if you don't mind, I wanna quote on one guy posted there (not gonna name it here). Stating "That moderator can't even english correctly." I wanna reply to that, "CUZ I DON'T SPEAK 'ENGLISH'! I SPEAK 'ENGRISH'!" rofl

Anyways, I don't wanna go off-topic too much, so if you still disagree with my post, plz pm me. I always get back any pm sent to me.

ichi
