Lets see a Supra by 2013, as soon as all the LFA buyers have their car in hand. Make it faster than the LFA, make it turbo. Sell it for a GT-R price. Then announce the LFA 2.0, with two turbos on a 5.0 V12 (1LR based), pushing at least 850hp, with McLaren F1 rivaling performance. Do it!

I would be completely happy with a 2URGSE/6 manual Supra weighing in at 3200 lbs. With a roomy-enough engine bay for extra special mods, and rigid roll-over section/rear suspension pick-up section of the chassis, even if it intrudes into trunk space.

Then they could make a Lexus version to replace the ugly SC and make that a place for all the sound-deadening, 20" wheels, 8 speed autos, 12 speaker stereos, and heated power seats that marketing douchebags love to have put into cars. As well as a big opening in the back for the 'mandatory' 2 golf bag test.

I would also be completely happy with Megan Fox giving me fantastic head.

PS: Does anyone know if the 2URGSE is closed deck block?

During a discussion with U.S. journalists on Friday in Japan, Toyoda was asked about the possibility of building a car like a Supra that would appeal to enthusiasts. As such a huge company, Toyoda said, "even if one president says that we want to have a Supra again, the whole company is not going to be responding to that request."

Toyoda explained that he did much of his development as a driver behind the wheel of a Supra and has fond memories of flinging that model around the Nürburgring. Speaking through an interpreter, Toyoda told the group that "would like to create a car that is better than the Supra, and just for your information, I am not against this idea."

However, this discussion came against the backdrop of a week where Toyota officials acknowledged that the company had grown too quickly in the past decade and would need slow down and re-prioritize. Between ensuring that upcoming models are trouble free, meeting new fuel and emissions requirement and delivering the FT-86 by 2013, a new Supra is likely to remain just a dream for the foreseeable future.

So would I, but it would not be what a lot of current Supra owners and potential Supra buyers are expecting. The supra was always a Z/Vette competitor, but the Mk IV was just so good, and the JZ series engines were just so beastly it completely changed the game. Not to mention that the GTR is a world car now, and the Vette has kicked it up a notch, If Toyota made a supra now that only competed with the Z it would be largely rejected I think. They wouldn't put the Supra badge on it.

That kind of Supra would be more parallel with an IS coupe, rather than an SC coupe.

the GR is open deck, but I believe the AZ has shown that regardless, the design can take quite a bit of abuse.

I was thinking of what they could do reasonably quickly with current tech. I think my proposal would slot closer to the GT-R than the Z from a power to weight figure. Think of a 911 Carrera S competitor from a pure numbers perspective. Properly tuned with a good amount of tire on it, the numbers should run with stock Vettes. The Mk3 never tried to compete with the era's ZR1, and the Mk4 never really had a 'Super-Vette' to compete with.

With the right pricing (Between the Z and the GT-R, 8k less than an ISF?) and assuming the engine and drivetrain could handle it, turbos would be thrown on very quickly. Hell in search for better spooling of big turbos, 1UZFEs are going into both Mk3s and Mk4s these days. A 5.0L motor would be a welcome platform for boost by some of the Supra community. As well as be able to put down some HUGE numbers (pending the open-deck block's strength).

The Nissan 370z is 31xxlbs and 330hp. Hardly makes for close to GT-R numbers. Without a stock turbo, it wouldn't make close to GT-R numbers for a reasonable price either.

Was talking about the fictional 3200 lbs 2UR Supra. 416hp to 3200 lbs is 7.7 lbs/hp. GT-R is approx. 3850 lbs and 480 hp for 8.0 lbs/hp. GT-R's gizmos and higher power would still probably out-drag it but the fictional Supra could out-drive it.

Even at a more realistic 3350 lbs with the 416hp 2UR would put it at just over 8.0 lbs/hp. I think people would be happy with that. With a well tuned suspension and brake package with a proper amount of tire and competition traction control (like the Lotus Exige's slip % control), I believe it could take a GT-R on all but the fastest road courses. Then let tuners like Titan through boost at it...

But like I said, it would need some Lexus 'equivalent' to suck up all the luxury shit that marketing douchebags would be trying to weigh it down with. Could work for Lexus if they style and market their version like a 'mini-LFA' to capitalize on the supercar.

While we're designing imaginary cars for Toyota, a 2GRFE could make a nice fictional new Celica. They did start off as RWD way back when. Build it on a shrunk down platform of the fictional new Supra (Nissan seems to use their FM platform for almost everything). Slot it between the F/T/R-86/S and Nissan's 370Z.

This would give Toyota a sports car product 'ladder' that marketing types seem to like. Take away sales from the Z, give something for F/T/R-86/S owners to upgrade to on their way to a Supra or Lexus (SC-F?). This would also almost guarantee that the F/T/R-86/S would remain a pure, fundamental sports car.

But what do I know...?

Toyota Secures Supra Trademark

Full Story at the source [Car & Driver]

Quote:
Toyota has applied to trademark the iconic Supra name, according to documents it filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on July 16. The company’s previous trademark on the model name expired in 2006, and for the past four years Toyota didn’t bother to renew it.

This may be more than just business as usual. Only four days earlier, Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda told journalists in Japan that he wants “to see the next Supra tested in the near future”, although he qualified that by adding “even if one president [Toyoda himself] says that we want to have a Supra again, the whole company is not going to be responding to that request.”

Toyota boss keen on new Supra

Quote:
Toyota boss Akio Toyoda has given his approval to the development of a new Supra – but concedes there may be resistance within the company to the car.

Toyoda told journalists in Japan that he “wants to see the next Supra tested in the near future” but added that “even if one president says that we want to have a Supra again, the whole company is not going to be responding to that request”.

See pics of the Toyota FT-HS concept

Autocar understands that the Supra replacement is on track for a launch in 2013/14 and its development is running in parallel to the delayed FT-86, the sports car Toyota is co-developing with Subaru.

The next Supra was previewed by FT-HS concept at the 2007 Detroit motor show and it’s likely to use a V6 hybrid powertrain for production.

Toyota to launch new Supra, MR2

Toyoda’s desire to build a new Supra stems from the time he spent at the Nurburgring driving the previous generation Supra. He said he “would like to create a car that is better than the Supra” and he was “not against the idea” of pushing through development of the car.

Toyota is also planning to launch a new MR-2 within the next four years, which will use a hybrid powertrain based on a 1.5-litre petrol engine.
