SOLVED: Is this 2013 Scion FRS Engine Knocking/Tapping normal? - Page 3 - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

I have had the same concerns about my car as well. I have a '13 with 11k miles. I noticed it about 6 months ago. I am just waiting to go to the dealership in the Spring when I get my oil changed to have them put their ears to it.

I hear exactly what you're describing yet I will make a video of mine when it does it and will be sure to post it. There is a TSB: S-SB-0033-13 : Hard Start, Rough Idle, Camshaft Sensor or Misfire DTCs. Not sure if this is causing the problem. I have had difficulty starting the car a few times in the past 2 years and had some rough idles as well.

I will be eagerly checking back for the results.

Update: Dealership called me and they could recreate the noise. They are not sure what it is. They are sending a toyota rep to come by tomorrow for them to make a call of what to do next.

Update as of a few minutes ago. Toyota authorized an engine tear down. Noise is not considered normal.

I will be out of a car for maybe a week. They are investigating what is causing it.

Picking up rental car tomorrow.

There MIGHT be a TSB soon.

My service advisor told me another FRS came in with the same sound.

Update as of today, 2-7-2015.

Engine is completely out of the car.

From the Root cause analysis they have found the rocker arm to be the culprit. There is scarring in the engine.

They are also checking the camshaft (they aren't sure if it's damaged).

No parts have been ordered currently. Awaiting Toyota's response as to how to handle the situation.

The technician said there were TWO Irregular noises. I could only hear one.

Won't get an update until Tuesday 2-10-2015.
