By far and away the most disappointing car I ever drove was a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 (Daytona). It may have just been the specimen I got to drive but my Dad's early 60's dump truck with 120K miles on it had a lighter clutch and a less fidgety transmission.

Still regret not buying it when I had the chance though!

One of the comments:

"- The second one was the BRZ. Hype, hype, hype. 200hp. Light weight. RWD. Manual. oh hey look, that Prius is passing us and I've got this thing floored. Thanks but no thanks."

Lol what a low blow

I had one as a rental once and LOVED it. Tons of options for the price, and felt like my old Hondas did. 10/10 would rent again.

For me, the most disappointing cars I've driven are:
- 2014 Mustang V6 auto (awful seating position, size/weight, steering feel, slushbox)
- 2014 Mazda CX-5 (magazines love the handling, but seems pointless in an otherwise harsh/noisy/underpowered SUV)
- 2009 Chevy HHR (awful everything)

And the most surprisingly good cars I've driven are:
- 2010 Mazda 2 (feedback/handling far exceeding its price)
- 2014 Mazda 6 (nice interior, drivetrain, etc. - total package)
- 2013 FR-S (wasn't expecting it to be this good, especially just after driving a Cayman S)
- 2005 Mini Cooper S (really fun car to drive, way better than my GTI actually)
- 2013 Evo X GSR (having owned an STI hatch, I didn't expect the Evo X to be that much sharper but it was)
- 2006 Evo IX MR (this was my first time driving an Evo, and pushing it hard in the rain was a revelation)
the mazda 2 is awesome. its a fwd na miata imo. i have one and love it.

15 WRX. I expected it to be great based on all the praise from the media, but it was very underwhelming. Just didn't feel special like the BRZ does, and after you've owned something with more power (I had a protuned 08 sti), the rush of boost is pretty underwhelming. Was really hard to get excited about it after seeing one in person.

I had high hopes for the Genesis, despite hearing about the transmission issues, and the fact that it's a larger car, but I sat down and went for a test drive anyways.
With the package including the sport tuned suspension and Brembos, I thought it would at least give me a fun ride, but coming from my MKV hatch, it felt so big and sloppy. Brakes had to be stomped on to slow down in any sort of panic stop situation (I was sort of biased at the time, since my car had Hawk HP+ pads all around)
Even so, there was so much body roll, and the power delivery from the turbo was flaccid, since I can't think of a better term to describe it with.
The sound generator pipe would drone, the clutch pedal wasn't consistent, and trying to shift quickly or rev match to downshift just wasn't going to happen, since it would grind and lock you out of gear.
I really wanted to like the car, since it was what I was going to buy instead of the BRZ, but it's not a car I would enjoy driving every day. Beautiful on the outside, and I can't help but stare when I see one pass by, but I know that, at the end of the day, I'm much happier with my slower and smaller (but more fun to drive) BRZ.
I test drove a 2.0T (all they had was the automatic) and it was one of the most disappointing things EVER... mostly, I think, a combination of the automatic, and the lack of power from the 2.0T.

The dealership called me a week later to test drive a 3.8 R-Spec manual, and let me tell you that might as well have been an ENTIRELY different car. Still didn't handle that great, but at least it felt alive.

2010 V6 Camaro RS... It's my fiance's and she got it for the looks.

I loved the look of these when they first came back out, but after driving it regularly for a few months, I loathe that car. I might as well be driving a school bus. And no one should ever complain about the passenger blind spot on the Twin until they've driven the new camaro... the entire car is a blind spot. I can't count the number of curbs I've hit in drive thru's because you just can't tell where the car ends... and I've driven trucks for almost all of the last 12 years so I know it isn't user error.

Also, the throttle response is terrible, but it's an auto so I guess some of that is to be expected.

Overall though, complete waste of what could have been a really cool car.

Disclaimer: I've never driven the SS so I can't say that all of the camaros are that bad, but it better have chassis-twisting power to make up for the horrid driving experience.

Recent Camaros and Mustangs.

They feel like trucks, sound like trucks, shift like trucks, roll around corners like trucks.

Pass, maybe the earlier ones are more like sports cars, or at least have a bit of charm.

Edit: To be fair, I'm basing this on V6's but my complaints are on chassis, suspension and overall perception, an engine doesn't fix those problems.

Plymouth Prowler

With the top up you're practically driving blind. The 4 speed auto is miserable and it's bolted up to a dog of a V6. Handling's bad too. Understeer all day.

The only upside is that it looks cool.

Not that it was bad, but I was expecting a lot from the 370Z when I came out. Good power, but it didn't accelerate like I thought it would with ~330 hp.

Truth. I actually tracked one exactly a month ago. I was chasing a GT-R that I couldn't quite catch up to, but I don't doubt that I was having twice as much fun as that driver.
