Porsche is pretty bad too, BMW less so (theres a bit more variety in the BMW fasias than Audi and Porsche).

Infiniti is starting to get pretty bad, its hard to tell apart the Q50 and Q70 (well the G37 replacement and the M replacement), and not just the front end, the whole entire car almost looks like clones of each other.

Ever since Acura started to tone down and dullify that beak they're starting to follow the same suit. It doesn't help that their car's styling is actually starting to get a bit more boring as well. The new TLX looks like a stretched ILX, and also looks like the nose-jobbed RL (now RLX) which was pretty conservative when it came out.

Seems like Lexus has the most differentiation between models, and they're not just simply cut/paste/stretch versions of each other. As ugly as you may think they are they do have more variety in their fascias than some of the other brands. They still look similar don't get me wrong, but each car seems to have its own lines.

Is it wrong that I have been thinking of 944s lately?

No, they are the current hot budget sports car, they will blow up over the next five years skyrocketing in price unless there's another economic crash. The 944S2 has basically identical performance numbers to the Toyobaru and the turbo's were quicker in a straight line. Well maintained they seem to be rather reliable, but that maintenance is expensive if you can't do it yourself due to the difficult packaging of everything (I think you have to disassemble the suspension to do a belt change which must be done every 30k I believe?). Running with gremlins can be had for under $5k for the higher trims (S and Turbo) but that's climbing. If you can live with something a tad slower than the Toyobaru (which honestly isn't that slow) you can pick up a clean base model for under $5k around here. $10k can get you a low mileage example of your choice but those often have problems because they weren't driven enough.

Also worth considering is the 928, a little more complex but more comfortable and faster in a straight line, I was seriously tempted to pick one up a while back, 160+ mph top speed with a hatch for under $10k doesn't sound like a bad deal at all...

Also flippy headlights:

^^ A 951 (944 turbo) will be faster in a straight line than most years of the 928's (less off boost torque, but whatever), and all 944's have flippy lights as well. You don't want a base base model 944, they only have 150hp. At the very least you want a 944s (16v engine), it has ~190hp. The S2 has more again at ~215hp, turbo is even more. If you can get a late model Turbo S that'll be the quickest, but more maintenance than the S2's.

As for the similarity in design, it has nothing to do with laziness. They spend MORE money to keep a corporate brand across all models. Toyota is no better, there are a ton of similarities across models. Look at the Yaris TRD kit and the GT86 TRD kit, or the new Corolla and the GT86/FRS.

That's b/c this car has drawn enthusiasts from all different kinds of car communities, and so many of us had to toss brand loyalty (or in us subie fans' case, we had to toss loyalty to a specific kind of drive-train despite the jeers of the die-hards) to get this car, so we come from all over with a kind of "I just like all kinds of cars" mindset. Had to in order to come to this car. We have BMW fans, Honda fans, toyota fans, subaru fans, nissan fans, etc., etc. Imports, domestics, Eurosport... all kinds, drawn to the first inexpensive, light weight, RWD sports car made in a long time that didn't have its make begin with M and end in -azda.

How'd you arrive to that conclusion unless you're comparing cars that are 2-5 years different in age?

1985 944 Turbo (1st year of the turbo model) 217 hp, ~2,800 lbs
1985 928 Base 292 hp, ~3,300 lbs

Every year the 928 slots in firmly above the 944 Turbo with more units produced: only 14k 944 Turbo's produced vs. ~26k 928's over the same period of time. Yes an early 928 is undoubtedly slower than a 944 Turbo (mostly due to the weight, similar overall power numbers) but still faster than a base 944.

I don't know why I've gone so in depth, they are very different cars with 500 lbs in between them, one is a grand tourer the other a sports car. It's like comparing an FRS to a Lexus IS.

944 headlights are about as interesting as a Miata's, these are cool:

In my case, about the only thing my 2.5RS coupe, bugeye WRX wagon, and BRZ have in common is the piston direction. And foglights.

You're forgetting that almost every single 928 is saddled with an automatic transmission. And not the great boxes we have today - POS 4 speeds!

Huh didn't have much of a problem finding MT's when I was looking a year or two ago, obviously not the same percentage as a Miata but better than most cars.

Late 80's turned out a lot of interesting sports cars that are a dime a dozen today and still very fun to drive, styling left a bit lacking though...

Toyota and Subaru joint forces to create an affordable sportcar.
Go to the general forum, have sticky thread about it.
