Do you think this is maybe why the factory limits advance so much when cold? That would help with cat efficiency.

Yes, all stock tunes retard the heck out of timing during cold start. This combined with an high idle speed is intended to get the catalytic converter(s) up to speed as quickly as possible. They don't work very well when they are cold.

Hey dad, your son is 18. He's about to go to college and make even dumber decisions. I'm 21, and here's my response:

Let him drive the BRZ one full day. He will get whatever he wants out of it. Then let him take it to prom after he has done what he wants so it isn't so new to him. DON'T keep a spare phone. If he knows you let him drive your car but you are monitoring him, don't you think that will make his night less eventful? I had a nice V8 convertible at age 18 and took it to prom. If he's responsible, he'll be fine. If you don't think he is, just don't do it at all. But don't over monitor him cuz that's when he'll be stupid with it. Trust me, he will want to rebel more if you put that phone in there. Ask me how I know.

Also, if you're worried about him getting laid in the car, it's damn near impossible, especially with her dress. Ask me how I know that, too.

The phone is not such a bad idea since he doesn't know it's there and his father will be able to see after if he acted stupid with it. I just think the whole "fuckup the car ECU so it's slow and stuff" is what is too much... Pretty sure he can still mess up the car even there..

While all of this is good advice, the torque app isn't really that bad of an idea since he is doing ex post facto monitoring of vehicle parameters. This comes from a 22 year old who has drifted ever vehicle we have ever owned and that includes a fwd car, low and long rwd dakota extended cab and 7' bed, fwd grand caravan, awd SUVs, 4X4 SUVs, and others. If OP trusts his son, he won't be stupid.

(PS, it will make your son more comfortable driving the car if you open it up or hoon just a tiny bit in a safe place. This helps drive the point that it doesn't make you a horrible person, it just needs to be done safe and well below the limits of the driver/car).

Consider just getting a cheap dash cam, instruct him to have it on the whole time, and have fun just don't be an idiot... This way if/when he does come home in a smashed up car you can look at the footage and see if he was telling the truth about the "lady that pulled out in front of him". Also very good for insurance purposes, and when you have some fun on the twisties. Not to mention when you/your kid park your car it's keeping an eye out for you.

I think if it was me being the 18 year old and taking it out, having it de-tuned would kinda be a slap in the face. Let him take it up in the rev range in a straight line when it's safe, if you cant trust him to do that, he shouldn't be out in the car at all.

I've done things with a girl in a prom dress, in smaller places than a frs. It's MORE than possible lol.

Nonetheless huskers post was right on point, at least I can understand where husker is coming from with the phone.

I agree the frs/brz is definitely capable. Just lay down the rear seats. God knows how many times I slept in the back of this car.

Truthfully, I think that's better than giving him less power and hiding the phone.
