It's much more visually interesting to me than anything that's come out in the last 10 years under $50k, so yes I suppose so.

Different strokes.

245 hp, 320 ft-lbs of torque, 3300 lbs and a better power to weight than an 86.

Fair enough. To me, the older mustangs (aside from the original ones from the 60s and 70s, of course) were never terribly exciting, visually (though I did see a SVT Cobra R driving around the other day, and it looked pretty unique). It isn't about how fast they are, it's more just about how they look (inside and out).

True that the muscle cars are being produced in much larger volumes, small light Japanese sports cars are niche so those are the numbers I pulled up. Not sure why they don't sell like they used to (for instance that first generation RX7 posted above sold over 800k for a 6 year period, same weight as the FRS with half the HP so it wasn't performance) but if there was the demand there would be enough produced. In any case worldwide the target is 100k units/year, hardly rare in my opinion.

Got one word for you. Power. People pay too much attention to the power figure and bragging rights on the internet/in person than they do about anything else.

Dozens of road trip impression threads, I thought this was more interesting and apparently other members agree by continuing to engage my childish ways.

Then why are most of those 'muscle' cars sold with V6s?
http://www.torquenews.com/106/chevro...sells-more-v8s
Unless you're saying that the power discussion only extends between the 86 and the V6 'muscle' cars. In any case, I think that if the 86 was more aggressively styled it would attract more buyers over it's lifespan than the current styling.

v6 or not the new "muscle v6s" still have that magic 300hp number. Not stating any facts, just a personal observation. Also Americans can relate to the camaro/mustang/challenger name, where with the FR-S their first response is what is that. Then when you tell them its branded Scion they would ask you what scion is lol

13k miles on mine, lots of fun has been had, I just don't think that makes for very interesting reading.

How far up are you doing (or did you get)?

After the great experience coming down from Colorado, I'm thinking maybe in the Spring that we'll take like 10 days and head over to Carlsbad, then up over Durango again, then all the way up to Yellowstone staying east of Salt Lake on 191, then back down home going through Salt Lake on I-15. All said and done about 3,500 miles.

I'm in Moab Utah right now. Photographing Arches National Park. I'll probably start heading home tomorrow, but I'm going to go back through northwest New Mexico. Through Los Alamos & Chama, taking the backroads, then across to visit some friends in the Texas panhandle before going home. The car is running great. Even better now that it can breathe some actual air again... so far I've averaged around 34 MPG overall. I can live with that...

I recommend you drive through the "Garden of the Gods" in Colorado Springs if you haven't been there. It's quite beautiful.

I was there a few years ago. Pretty place. But Moab...wow. I'm going to bring my 4Runner back up here and get in the backcountry.

So I got tired of getting rained on in Colorado and am heading back to south Texas. Overall impressions from the trip:

Great gas mileage. Averaging 34 MPG, even up & down in the mountains.
The car is a lot more comfortable than I thought it would be. Several days of driving 10+ hours just stopping for gas & eats and I felt fine...
Last but not least, the car needs another 100 HP. Then it would be perfect. (At least to me).
Back to the flatlands tomorrow....
