The dirty little secret about car salespeeps is that their average dealership tenure is 18 months. Of course there are exceptions, but the volume stores depend on noobs selling to friends and family during their first year when they'll often outperform industry average 12-15 new units per salesperson per month. After that, their number usually decline but they must still meet quotas and handle the pressure or hit the road.

Manufacturers have training and incentives structured to retain good salespeople and managers. If applied as intended by the dealer principal (meaning they don't keep the incentives to themselves), they can be effective.

Retailing anything is tough. Automotive retail in a world unto itself. It's beyond cutthroat, bordering on immoral at times. As others said, do your own research and understand that the claims and promises made by a salesperson are worthless unless written into a contract signed by a manager.

When I went in to test drive and purchase my FR-S the Sales Manager (who I've dealt with for years and knows me very well) purposely put me with a brand new salesman. He told him to listen to everything I said and to ask me lots of questions about the car. He knew I'd already done my homework and knew more about the cars than his salesmen.

When we got done with everything the salesman thanked me for the 'lessons'.

I should have gotten his commission!

When I was shopping in June of last year I didn't care whether I bought the BRZ or FR-S. I visited multiple Subaru dealerships and the local Toyota dealer that I have a relationship with.

At my first Subie dealer I inquired about a model that I knew to be inbound to their lot due to Subaru's online inventory system. They had to verify, took 10 minutes, then the sales woman brought in the sales manager to talk to me about the car. I asked them if they could call me when it comes in so I could test drive. I told them I was considering both the FR-S and the BRZ.

He proceeded to tell me about 20 things that the BRZ has over the FRS. I listened politely. When he was done I told him that he was wrong and that about the only mechanical difference was spring rates....at that point they told me they'd need a non-refundable deposit from me. I walked and never went back.

Wow. Just.... wow. And you wonder why I personally believe every second or third word out of a dealership rep's mouth is pure bullshit.

For the sake of entertainment, do you remember anything of the list of 20 items the BRZ had over the FR-S?

Not many but a few....

- Better brakes
- Different suspension components
- Better transmission
- "sport exhaust"

Can't remember everything. 20's an exaggeration on my part but there were several things he rattled off... after the first few I just smiled and started thinking about how much BS he was trying to feed me.

While you can't blame him for trying to pimp the BRZ over the FR-S, at the very least use some real facts. Sometimes they just need to know when they're dealing with an informed customer and try to win him or her over with something other than made up bullshit.

Damn, 18 months? I thought it would be less than a year.

My father just went and asked for an Auto just today....of course if he could drive Manual he would, but not after he's had that knee surgery after an injury.
