The reason we have so many of these "angry Dadmobile" hot hatches is because they're utterly cheap to make. Compared to a custom-made RWD sports coupe these things are bargain basement specials. Take a FWD econobox, slap on a Speed Racer body kit, turbocharge it, and tune the suspension a bit. Look, it's the new Velosifocusclio RS-TZR.

I agree that this is indeed simple economics; car companies operate on often-thin margins and being able to leverage an existing economy car platform while still producing something for the enthusiast market is very attractive to them.

I appreciate that these sorts of cars are a nice blend of practicality and performance, which makes them very attractive to a great many people.

They're not my style- I don't need that much practical - but many people have been asking for them and more fun-to-drive cars is never bad.
