This car is not in the same price/power bracket as a Z.

I have ripped off my ragtop from my MX5 and I have permanently installed a hardtop.

I consider myself a potential FT86 buyer/user/driver...

I don't understand this decision. By making it a convertible you have essentially turned the car into a miata or a s2000. The reason a lot of people are interested in this car is because it is essentially a coupe version of those cars. If I wanted a miata, I would have bought a miata (and welded a hardtop to it like blokatos). The thing that makes it special is that it is a coupe and it fills a niche that the miata can't. But whatever, more money for the Toyota overlords I guess.

T-tops or Targa might be OK...but I'd still get the coupe.

There won't only be a vert if they actually make it. You can still have your coupe. Hell, I'm getting the coupe because I have my S to be the convertible. I don't know about the MSRP on Miata's but the MSRP on a new S2000 was 35+ so that doesn't really fly comparing the two. Folks looking at the 86, vert or not would not even consider spending 35+ on a new car.

Yes but because the S is getting cancelled by the time the 86 comes out a used S2000 won't be 35k+. My point was that I don't see what would make the 86 convertible stand out against a miata or S2000? To me the fact that the car is a coupe is what makes it fill a niche that it is currently empty (i.e. affordable lightweight rwd coupe).

I'm not hating on the convertible Ft-86, like others have said I hope they sell a ton of them to keep the platform alive, but I just don't see what will draw people who are looking for a rwd convertible away from a used S or a new miata other than styling.

That alone would be enough for me. I dunno though, people just have different tastes. I think the vert would be more of a chick car than anything. Like you said though, anything that helps draw more people into purchasing it is a good thing in order to keep it relevant.

Having a new car (as opposed to a used S2k), having the newest hot model out on the market, the Toyota nameplate, the FT-86 (or whatever it'll be called) nameplate... those are all possible reasons.

And of course styling, which you already mentioned. That could be the biggest reason.

Perhaps there is also an outside chance that taller folk might fit better in an FT-86 roadster than the miniscule 43.1" of legroom in the MX-5 (or the slightly more 44.3" in the S2000)... but probably not
Thanks one of the reason my friend bought S2k. He wanted to buy a FR car, but Z headroom wasn't big enough, so he bought S2k. Some times he play around and looking above from front windshield and drive. It's funny view.

You can get a new MX5 for 22K.So I don't know where you got the 28K+ from.
