I love my AT FR-S. The transmission is extremely well sorted for such an inexpensive car. This isn't a typical slush box auto. The shifts in sport mode are very firm and I was pleasantly surprised when I first drove it. The paddle shifters are pretty damn quick and it's nice to use cruise sometimes.

To be honest, I don't see the appeal of manual transmission in such a low power car. I would rather leave that to a high power weekend car. My commute involves 20 mins of stoplights and light to light jaunts so I didn't feel the need for a manual.

5 years+ and still loving the AT; it only makes sense in a large urban city with lots of traffic jam. Like most have already said, this is no ordinary "slush box".

It's reliable, holds up to more torque than the MT, shifts faster, and more fuel economic; all that and then some, without any sacrifice. Enjoy your new car!

Approaching 3 years of ownership and still love the A/T. Mind you one of the first big mods was an aluminum one piece drive shaft and a set of Cusco 4.556 final drive gears, which really woke the car up.

It made each gear around 11% faster and throttle response improved noticeably. Great bang for your buck mod for an N/A and especially for our A/T cars.

Grats on your new car!

you honestly don't see the appeal of a MT in this car? you're in a very small club then.

Low powered cars are best with a manual transmission because it helps you squeeze every last pony out of a car.

The 86 is already low on power as it is with the manual transmission, but with the automatic you are getting a considerably slower version of an already slow car.

I wouldn't get an AT if you getting a '17 model as it doesn't receive the increase in Power and Gearing.

He can just stick a K&N filter for that 5hp Look at it this way: AT is so perfect they just couldn't find a way to improve it.

Using that logic then we can just put in a K&N for 5hp and be at 210HP!.

Part of the upgrade to the 17 MT is also the Airfilter box is the same as the TRD one on the older models which you would miss out on going AT. Along with a better stock tune to take advantage of it

I went with AT. After 20 years of MT and moving to LA, my left knee told me it would make sure it would die a painful death if I bought another MT car. I have actually found I enjoy driving again.

I'm struggling internally with AT vs MT right now. If the car had torque the decision would be easier to make; with my Abarth (5spd), the Auto is actually a little quicker than the manual because of the turbo midrange and gearing. I didn't realize how good the AT was in that car or I probably would've bought one, its really more fun than the MT. I live in OC and the traffic is balls... had a knee replaced so I'm almost accepting an AT, but the lack of torque really is making the AT a tough sell. The 86/BRZ AT is pretty good, it just suffers in the 0-20 range.
