Probability of Eyesight Tech in 2018 BRZ

To answer the OP's question: this generation of BRZ will not receive Eyesight.

1) I had a co-worker with driver assist. The car jammed on it's brakes after a shopping bag was flipped out from under another car towards the camera. Maybe it's safer in the long run, but does it increase risk of getting rear-ended by a following car who's not expecting you to hit the brakes?


2) Are these systems defeatable, like during an autocross? In other words, does the system get activated by driving closer to the cones than the car thinks is safe? (Maybe more relevant to VW, where the camera is down low.)

I'm guessing your co-worker had a different brand other than Subaru? Our cars use stereoscopic cameras and 3D processing, so it would be highly unlikely to activate front end collision prevention because of a bag. Systems using radar or lidar would be more susceptible to this.

And yes, you can defeat eyesight features. Lane Keep Assist is off by default, and automatic braking can be turned off as well even on the fly. Would definitely be advisable if you're sticking the nose of your WRX up the back bumper of that poorly driven Ferrari at the track day.
