But this is quite refreshing from all the rich kids driving the usual exotic cars running around Vancity these days.

I still remember when I was in a similar situation as you when I was your age.

Here is the car I lusted for (and still do actually):

Back on topic: I studied biology before switching over to engineering. About 25% of the class in first year said they wanted to go to med school (class size of ~600?). After third year, one guy I knew got into med school (McMaster), then another two got in after finishing their undergrad (one continued at University of Toronto, second guy went to the Caribbean's). Of course I didn't know everyone in the class but I would imagine <2.5% make it to med school, then who knows how many actually graduate. Some peeps went to pharmacy school, some did their masters and few completed their PhDs.

Not trying to rain on your parade - maybe you're part of that small percentage who will end up in med school and graduate.

Personally, I would hold off until school is over.

Good luck and WORK HARD!

Here's the question no one's asked yet: do you NEED a car or do you WANT a car?

If you need a car, then take that 4k and buy a lemon. If you don't know how to drive manual, buy a manual car and beat the shit out of it in order to help you learn so you'll be ready when you get a twin.

Wanting something is completely different. Think about human desire; one month we may be obsessed about something to the point where it drives us insane, then the next month we forget about it and move on to something else. You may think that you want a BRZ now but what about in 4-5 years? What if another awesome cheap sports car is launched that you like even more than the BRZ? You said yourself that you won't be able to enjoy the BRZ during med school, so think about your perception of the car as the weeks drag by, the payments pile on. Soon enough you'll be in a financial hurricane and every time you see your BRZ it'll only remind you of how screwed you are, and you'll eventually begin to view the car as the sole reason why you're in a rut and you'll hate it, and by the time you're through med school and in a job you'll be so sick of the car that you won't even want it anymore.

I know how wanting something that bad feels; you basically convince yourself that you will want the thing forever and nothing but that single thing can satisfy your craving. But it never lasts, never. You're young, and I'm young too, so we're more vulnerable to drastically changing wants and desires than the older members here. We're in what I like to call our "quarter-life crisis", which is just like a mid-life crisis but without the means of paying for what we want. The best thing for you to do is to forget about the BRZ and focus on school, give it a few years. I know it seems like forever, but it'll pass faster than you think it will, and I bet that once you have enough money to buy a BRZ you'll already be wanting something else.

Good luck with med school btw.

I'm a 19 year old dude going to school full time in Vancouver, planning to go to med school, also working 25-30 hours a week @13 dollars to pay for my bills and such.

Over the past year and a half, ive become obsessed with owning a BRZ and I've saved up approx $4000 dollars for a down payment to finance the car and I'm asking for your help to guide me into getting this car in the next few months because I know that once I go into med school, I will neither have the time to enjoy my car (I'll be 32 by the time I become a full doctor), nor the money because I'll be hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt.

Also, before you tell me to wait another year and save up... The insurance is obviously going to be under my dad's name, and he only visits canada once every 2 years...

Now... the other day I saw the thread about everyone mocking the gofundme thing and I thought hey, maybe that'll work for me to get my dream car but I realize and know that it comes off as a very douche bagy move to ask people to help you get your car.

Anyway, Im asking for the collective minds of this forum to offer me any guidance / advice to getting my dream car...

I dont want this thread to turn into a hate thread, I'm just genuinely asking for some guidance.
Thanks

fuck it man. i say go for it. you are going to be golden once you pay off the car and graduate school. just dont get ****ed on the interest rate. im assuming youll be a first time buyer but that is a nice dowb payment on that car. save maybe 1-2 more thousand (not for the down payment, for oh shit emergency money) and youll be fine. ill be done paying mine off when im 34 next year. as long as you can afford all your shit and do well in school i say do it man.

I'm going to get killed for saying this on a BRZ forum, but if you want a fun RWD sports car, four grand will get you a decent NA Miata.

Get a beater and save your money. Once you get a decent job you can get the car. As you make more money you will see your dream car change and go up in price. We have all been there. Used for sure unless you get a sweet job.

Same, and I second this.

My Miata may actually be my favorite car by virtue of what you get for the money and the fun of having a beater car. If I put my Z or twin on a track and wreck it, I lose a very rare color option that I can't replace or an expensive newish car respectively. If I hit a tire wall in the Miata, I just buy a new fender or another $2-3,000 dirt cheap POS and swap the aftermarket parts over. I can push it hard and learn good driving and car control without having to fear what happens if I make a mistake. It is my best car and my worst car at the same time in that respect, but I definitely love having a cheap, crappy car. Get yourself a cheap Miata or 240 and go enjoy it at a track/autocross/back road. Let off some steam when you're not studying, and do it in a way that you aren't losing much if something bad happens.
