I think that's the only way I'd buy another 86 is if it was powered by magic triangles.
I wouldn't be so quick to call it dead. 940 Twins sold in August, 4+ years after release and just before a model refresh. That's far better than I would have expected, and sadly better than the new ND Miata (823) which is being featured by pretty much every magazine right now.

Eh, guess the joking tone didn't come across.

But I absolutely wouldn't be surprised if it didn't see a 2nd gen, even 1k units per month isn't spectacular, especially remembering early reports of planned 100k units of production per year.

Regardless we won't know anything until 2020-ish anyway.

Edit: Mazda Miata is an exception to the production numbers rule. And don't forget to include Fiat Spider numbers in that too, ~400 units per month so far Mazda IS churning out more ND chassis than Subaru is churning out 86 chassis for the U.S.

Haha I must have missed the green font, but I think 100k units was a global production goal for the first year, with Toyota/Subaru passing that sales volume sometime during the second year.

I'd be highly surprised if they don't come out with the next gen. Tada-san seems to be all-in and doing a decent job selling the 86 to his board. If nothing else, the 86 has gotten "driving enthusiasts" interested in Scion and Toyota again. Probably not as much for Subaru (already had the WRX/STI), which might explain their less-enthusiastic approach to the partnership.

Edit: Good point on Fiat.

You like bad mileage? Good thing gas is cheap right now but the governments of the G8 countries will make it pretty tough to sell a new rotary engine going forward, unless they figure out a way to better handle emissions. Either way the carbon footprint will probably be too big.

Lots and lots of this if past performance is any indication. I would like to see the design cleaned up a bit in the front. The front wheel arches in particular don't do a thing for me.

Performance wise, leave it alone; there really is nothing to be gained. Trying to make significant gains in this department it will just confuse an already confused target market and drive up cost of purchase and ownership. It is already one of the most engaging cars to drive as is, so unless they can improve on that by adding less weight and better chassis feel, I can see a lot that can be done.

Whatever changes should be similar to what Mazda changed when they did the NB Miata; same but different.

The whole more power war cry is really a small but very, very, vocal group of people that have actually driven one and a massive mob of people that haven't but really like pretty graphs and numbers. People already can't drive it with what it has and I can just picture the carnage that would result if they doubled the HP like so many say it "needs".

Hard to. tell if the model will be extended. The model came out with huge fanfare, expectations, etc (I was caught up in it as most of us were) and then .... right or wrong ... there was a perception that the car needed more power.

Well the FT1 (Supra) is coming out. I liken it to an 86 on steroids. This will satisfy those who wanted more grunt.

The current platform is excellent. Seems like a waste if Toy was to scrap the entire line.
Not sure what the answer is.

Realistically thinking, it's going to be axed!

Car was build for specific group of people and those people had already bought the car, got tired or the car or they rather stick with the OG AE86 instead. There's nobody else to sell the car to.

Turbo? They'll probably put the NX200t engine into FWD coupe to compete with the SI or WRX.

There's not a hell of a lot of Corolla GTS models surviving here.

Don't piss off Toyota, or they will just carry the identical model to 2018. LOL

Who am I kidding, they might do that anyway.

They have already stated in an official press release (not a blog or clickbait) that they are "looking at" different trim levels for the 18s. Little doubt there will be more options but the basic car will remain the same until at least 2020. after that who the hell knows (somebody may know but they can't say and anybody that says they know and can say don't really know)

I don't know why but I thought the twins were slated to run in their current form until a redesign in 2018. Guess I read wrong.

Anyway, the current car is awesome so the next owners will get to have the most equipped twins ever!
