Honestly I'm even taking into consideration that Subaru said they will commit to a second generation BRZ in 2020 so I'm hesitant to invest heavily in the 2017 BRZ.

a used 86 is looking mighty enticing for the price and condition
Live without? No. It's just an all around better package. If you're planning to switch cars in a couple years however a used model would make more sense that or a lease.

yeeeaah, I am really hesitant to invest big cash on the 2017 BRZ when I'm anxious to know what the 2nd gen BRZ will be like in 2020.

I am utterly baffled by what Mazda did with their 4th gen (ND) MX-5. It totally blew its predecessor out of the water and I'm wondering if the BRZ will do the same.

I think I'm leaning towards the used 86 at this point.

It is surprising actually, because when I looked for the same car in the US, it was near impossible to find an unmolested example. It seems this car is always mechanically butchered in the US.
Very cool! In that case I would absolutely go used. Why pay 2x the price of a used one for a new one that isn't that mechanically different?

I too am excited, as are I'm sure most of this forum about the possible second gen. If it comes out in 2020 It will be perfect timing as well because I'll be graduating law school and looking for a new car. I had my eyes set on a R8 V10 plus 6mt but depending on what the second gen is like it may sway me to it instead.

I'm way more inticed by light weight rather than power.

When I had the 2005 Oxster S I could feel the weight of it in corners compared to the 2001 Celica I had which weighed only 2400 lb. This is even though the Boxster handled better! so there is no tricking physics.

So, what I'm looking for in a new car is lighter weight. If Subaru achieves what Mazda did in the MX-5 when they bring out the 2020 BRZ, than that will be a game changer for me.

Mazda has really outdone themselves with the MX-5. I don't like convertibles else I'd go for the MX-5. the 1.5L is only 2050 lb !

So, I'm looking more closely at the the 2020 BRZ in hope that they pull a CX-5 on it, or the Lotus Elise which is said to be around 2000 lb as well.

I'll take lighter weight over HP any day of the week.
