I wonder if percentage wise, the amount of accidents were similar to today based on how many people owned vehicles then, and now.

Do you mean to imply that the near 30k deaths would indicate less accidents?
I remember learning about the whole seat belt thing, where tons of deaths were being caused because of the lack of and/or the design(over waist only), oh and can't forget the non-crumple hoods when in the event of an accident would launch itself into the cabin, killing basically everyone.

I doubt those numbers exist. Overall accident stats are primarily compiled by the insurance companies and mandatory insurance wasn't around back then.

My exhaust is so loud & vibrates so much that the back left indicator wire has rattled a touch loose. Need to fix the wiring now.
So no need to move my seats at all Lol.

I recall from my econ classes in college (and I think it ended up in the first Freakonomics book as well) that although driver and passenger fatalities have decreased as vehicle safety measures have improved, overall accident rates have either stayed flat or increased. In particular, economists love to quote a guy named Tullock who studied seat belt laws and found that although the percentage of accidents resulting in fatalities of the driver or passengers went down, the occurrence of accidents went up because people felt safer and would drive faster and more recklessly. It still would have been a positive gain, except that there was also a corresponding rise in fatalities among pedestrians and bicyclists, so net fatalities remained about the same.
Tullock said that if you wanted safer drivers, the way to do it would be to put a steel spike in the center of the steering wheel. Then everyone would slow down, drive extra carefully and keep a sharper eye out for other drivers. |

Not just you, but I personally don't do it intentionally. My seats are down when I need the room, otherwise I get enough road and wind noise in the cabin as-is, and they stay up.
