I would imagine it has something to do with increased scrub radius and stress on related components.
edit Apparently I'd be wrong though. |

I already said besides aero or additional bearing load though.
That isn't too low an offset either. More flush if anything. It's not like it's poking out 5" like a parachute lol...maybe only a few mm's at most. Isn't saying it'll hurt aero kinda exaggerating? Wouldn't flush be better than sunk, aero-wise? ..since there's no void/deadspace in the sunk wheelbase that'll result in air flow disturbance. |

14.5mm then you got to put tyres on it, looks like you'll be doing stance to get it to fit.

Idk what "stance" is..but I think you're referring to the slammed car look? "Stance showcar fitment" ...Not necessarily though..all that's needed is -2to-3 front camber to make it look/fit perfectly ..which you'd already be doing anyways if you'd be tracking the car. |

Steering parts, too. Now instead of twisting the wheel in place, the steering system is trying to swing it in an arc. Add on some awesome 140 tread wear tires and that's a lot more traction it has to overcome to swing the wheel around.

Ok...so we've pointed out some cons..
...but what about the pros? (I'm sure there's some pros...unless we truly are all pessimistic/cynical in here haha ) ...wider width..better cornering ..better stability, right? |

I'm interested in doing 17's but I can't decide if I want to go with a 7.5 or an 8" rim.
With the 17x8 I can run a 215/45R17 (stock size) or a 245/45R17 and be really close to stock diameter, or even a 235/40R17 (a bit shorter) or 225/45R17 (taller). That's a great range of tire sizes, so the 17x8 seems attractive. Especially for the 245's. I would probably do 215's for now and go from there, as my car is and will remain stock power levels for some time. I think some Michelin PSS in the stock size on some nice light 17's would be the trick. Now we get to the questions... 1. I have heard that running a tire on its max rim width give better turn-in but is less predictable. That's what I'd be doing, running the 215 on the 17x8. How squirrely would this be? 2. Running 245/45R17 (Let's say PSS again) with otherwise stock suspension on a +45 or +48 wheel, what are the chances of it rubbing? I guess I'm thinking, sticky 215's would be plenty for now, but I don't want to regret 17x7.5" rims if the 8's would be more or less the same. |

Well, I just received 20/25mm spacers for my OEM wheels, so I'll find out. Then too, I don't track my car; I bought spacers to push the wheels out so they don't look sunken in.

Pilot Super Sports are a great sticky summer tire that does well for most people. On stock suspension it'll be fine...more camber and maybe a little more roll resistance would make me "happy" with them but still good. With R-compounds you'll definitely want firmer springs, probably coilovers. And on the flipside, very firm coilovers with the OEM tires is going to lose grip easily. - Andy |
