The Supra is the second favorite car I have owned (and I have owned too many) aside from my FD RX-7's.

It's my first non-manual sports car I have ever owned (after 35 years of owning nothing but manual sports cars). For the 2021's Toyota modified the engine and suspension/handling which improved the car from the 2020 model. I really was not sure if I was going to like not having a manual but so far I rarely miss rowing a manual (I do paddle shift about 99% of the time) and I hope to have a fun project car with my son and it will be a manual.

The Supra is really, really fast. I don't think people realize what even something like a JB4 can do to these cars, but if you do down the route of a tune and downpipe, it's really all you need for about 500whp/tq which is really addicting.

I only get to the track 5-6 times a year on a good year so I have more focused on making the car fast and have worked on some suspension upgrades to improve driving feel, and handling. The the FT86 platform there are so many mods available for the Supra and I have started adding some SPL parts to the suspension which really transforms the handling and feel. So many cars are muted due to rubber bushings which SPL addresses. But I don't want to go too overboard so I am slowing modding things to keep a nice balance of comfort and sport.

I really enjoyed my BRZ, it was a great handling car with a terrific platform to build off. But I knew I had certain power goals and the platform didn't make sense to me at that point and went in another direction entirely. The GR series is really a nice improvement IMHO in terms of improving what they already had without ruining the point of the car.

i asked myself this twice in 2014, 4 months apart when the first brz got totaled. except it was the nissan gt-r, to re-build a 240z into what i wanted, or that newfangled brz/fr-s.

Please assume that, hypothetically, the Supra came in manual. Which was the point of the original post.

If money was no concern we'd probably own a Supra instead of a MY22 BRZ. But only because I own a 1st gen and my wife's car is not going to get tracked. A GT style car would be a better fit. It'd even be AT

Hell, we almost got a 2.0 Supra instead of the BRZ but decided to be sensible instead of maxing our budget

I'm afraid that if I buy a car with the cargo capacity of a Supra, Z, Cayman, or Emira I won't use it enough. I limited myself to 2+2s with folding rear seats for this reason. I'm buying a GR86 but may replace it in a year or so with a M2.

As for the Supra specifically, I just couldn't live with its styling. I like its engine and am intrigued by its transmission but the fake vents and nose are deal breakers for me. I'm a little put off by the reviews that dislike the feeling of sitting on the rear wheels and some odd steering/front suspension sensations.

If you're seriously considering the Supra I think you'd be crazy to buy before checking out the Z.

I can't say that the twins are necessarily better cars and if given the option of either for free I wouldn't instinctively take the more expensive one, but honestly the Supra is like they hot girl I have zero chemistry with, and the twins are a less hot but attractive to my eye and I do have good chemistry with.

If this were the twins vs m2c, that's different, just the fact that it has a manual and the timing chain in the correct side of the engine is enough to make me get it over the Supra.

With all that said the 86 just makes more sense for me.

The Supra's definitely fun, but I came away from the test drive thinking that I wouldn't know what do to with one. It's quite pretty (especially in yellow), but:
-it's not as roomy as an 86, even at the front
-no backseat
-the trunk is decent in size, but the opening's shape makes it awkward to use, i.e. cannot load a bicycle, or do an IKEA run as well as a twin
-it's not a good only car
-it's heavier than the twins
-the powertrain felt "videogamey" in its sound, delivery, and lack of involvement
-I don't see what it does that I can't already do in my 86

And on top of that, there are the -not relevant here- money arguments
-Expensive to buy, especially in Europe
-Expensive to run (fuel, tires, maintenance, etc.)

On the other hand, the Supra is probably a much better daily, a lot quieter, more comfortable, has a better sound system, an AT, etc. Plus, it's a better "image" product.

The twins cater to a niche market of people who want an involving RWD car with the running costs of an econobox, decent practicality, and the ability to combine daily driving and occasional track use. I'm glad this niche exists, but I'd understand a lot of people would put their -unlimited- money towards the Supra instead.

Really really really wish the "new Supra" had been a short-wheelbase cab-rearward FT86... BMW Supra is fine I'm sure, but too massive for me. Haven't driven modern BMWs but they get bad reviews for steering feel. Partnering with BMW kind of ensured the Supra would be overweight Having owned BMW, Porsche, Datsun, Nissan, Honda, now Subaru, I kind of like the Japanese manufacturers approach with sports/sporty cars. The Germans don't even try to build more minimalist, lighter-weight cars, which is too bad IMO...
