I’m surprised to see you buying sam car 3 in a row! I thought you’re type of person trying/testing all different brands/types of cars

None of them really had issues. The 2012 was just not the car the 08 was. Think a lot of it had to do with Mitsubishi's plans to drop out of the performance car market and the roll back they did to the lineup.

Mitsubishi just isn't Mitsubishi without Jackie Chan and the red diamond logo.

Hmm. Depends. Would be hard to not look at a 2009-12 Cayman or Boxter S for about the same money as a new 86/BRZ. Or maybe an (well-used) Elise for a bit more. But the twins compromises in the enthusiast parameters make for a pretty damn good all-around package so idk.

Or maybe take the insurance money and my beater, trade it in on a decent new(er) DD, and go find a project car that needs a ton of work. Or a kit car for the lulz.

I do but I tend to gravitat to the flashy and unusual. Can be hard for Americians to think of the LAncer as flashy since you had them for so long but we didn't have any Mistubishis here until late 2002 when they started selling the 03 model year cars. My yellow Lancer Rally Edition was one of the very first ever brought into the country and was very unusual. I would park in a lot and have half a dozen or so people looking it over in minutes. I wanted an Evo but they could not import them until the X came out due to crash test issues. I liked that little yellow car so much that when it hit 300K miles I traded it for the 2008 Lancer GTS. Those were pretty much a NA version of the Ralliart and shared much of the suspension and brake system. It was a sweet car to drive and would easily kick the ass of "better" cars. When it got up in miles I got the 2012 GT thinking (and being told) it was the same thing and I wasn't prepared to fork over the price they wanted for the Evos (MRSP + at least 10%). Turned out it was a base model everything with a leather interior and "special" grill. It sucked and I learned to do better research.

I will only buy new so that takes all the "get a nice used XXX for only $yyyy" off the table. I am the guy that allows all those used XXXs to exist.

Nothing against Lancer, I just expected you to get Lancer > CRZ > Sentra > Impreza and so on. Didn't expect you stay in same brand/model for that much.

Also surprised Canada didn't pass the safety. I thought US had strict E&S, but I guess I was wrong. When I think Canada, I think of all the import cars (15yo car gets imported)... so expected safety to be less strict than US.

It actually wasn't a safety issue that prevented the pre X Evos from being imported. The location of the intercooler in the bumper exceeded the allowed cost for repair in a 10 MPH crash. It has long been thought it was really just a loophole the government used to keep the cars out of the country.
There have been plenty of earlier Evos brought into the country with the 15 year rule. I even got to drive a 99 V GSR once. It was actually a bit underwhelming compared to newer cars. My old Talon would have kicked it's ass in all departments.

Well if you're talking bout first gen Talon, then Evo V did have same engine (4G6)... so power output should be same. Evo V weight 80~120kg heavier than Talon as well. Also GSR, so they had Yaw Control which was WAY wacky. They claim they upgraded since IV, but overall it didn't improved til VII. I used to own V and I didn't mind it. But again, I was in Okinawa, so didn't have place to really push that car to it's limit.

Huh, TIL. Never knew that was a thing but it makes sense. Anybody know if that is a test in the US as well?

No it is not in the USA crash test criteria.

I will take it.
My great aunt had one just like that from new in 1961. She drove it once a week for many years. There was zero floor left in it, I doubt the oil had ever been changed and all the brake parts were original. It was still going strong when she died in about 1980.

Even Dodge can be called out for reusing the name on radically different cars.

Nothing to do with age. Found memories always rule.
