I don't think they would take over CSP by any means. CSP is a money pit with miatas. When the new generation came out we got beat badly by the big 275's they were running. Now that they are running 275/15's on the first gen miatas, cutting up the fenders they are about 1975 lbs at fighting weight, it would take ALOT to get a BRZ to compete.

Agreed... But maybe FI & SM may work?

Then you get to race CSP miatas with superchargers.

I have read over the SCCA rules and just want to check with you guys because of your experience. If you add an oil cooler or bigger radiator, you move to SP or SM correct?

I wrote a letter to put them in DSP since the RX-8 is now in DSP. I think it would be tough to run against the BMWs in the class or even a full-tilt RX-8 build, but it's a better fit than CSP. You would have to gain at least 3-4 seconds I imagine on a 60 second course for the car to be competitive in DSP.

The twins would have very serious competition. It'd be tough for them to go against SM Evos and such, but it may be course dependent.

I believe it's SP.

Okay, so doing some research, pretty much everything I read says that oil coolers are a must for this car when tracking, even when staying N/A. What have you guys who have actually done some tracking with this car discovered?

From my understanding, oil coolers are illegal for the STX class, correct?

What are the options for this predicament?

I ran 9+ months in STX with no cooler. I think in AutoX the runs are short enough that the cooler isn't necessary. Track days are another matter of which I have no experience.

I'd be much more worried about the BMW. The RX8 gains next to nothing in SP trim.

If its an STX car it should go into DSP. Its not going to gain additional power over e85.

^^^ don't know if I agree with that. because you can change the manifold, the injectors, Fuel Pump and tune for C16.. That in itself is worth about 25hp..more if your a turbo car. Which isn't allowed in STX. Not saying it would be competitive in SP ..Yet..

You can also reduce more weight out of the car over ST. Plus..AERO.. I don't know?? maybe.. one day..

Hey Bill,
Much appreciated thread - I'm excited to browse through but I have a quick question I can't help but ask - Can you have an upgraded radiator like the Koyo and a oil cooler in STX? those are two items I heard are worthy upgrades on our cars.
Thanks an sorry if this is a repeat.

If you have questions on what may or may not be legal ... Post away.. there are quite a few 'experts' here on the site that will be available to help you understand what your getting into..

Some General Rules to consider:

-The Car is classed in STX Class, Which has a pretty big following since most of the mods that are allowed are pretty much the mods your doing anyways..
-STX is a Street Tire Class.. so your tires have a minimum of 140 treadwear, and they can be no wider than a 265 on a 9in wheel.
-Suspension Swaps are allowed....Springs Swaybars, Coilovers, and Bushings...
-Exhaust mods are allowed including the Header, overpipe, Midpipe and catback with an aftermarket system...the only stipulation is that you must have a cat in your system.. you can Delete the Factory Cats and replace it with a Hi-flo unit as long as its within 6 in of the furthermost cat (the back one)...
-Any Intake System can be used as long is it mounts to the OE Throttle body.
-Any Engine management Can be used to achieve optimum tune
-Aftermarket BBK as long as they are the same size or larger than stock. Brake Lines can be changed to Stainless with any fluid.
-Lightweight battery as long as it puts out the same voltage. and you can re-locate it if needed to the trunk area.
-Engine and tranny mounts as long as they are NOT solid
-Any LSD.
-Any Seats can be used but there is a minimum weight.(25lbs for the whole assy)

What CAN'T BE DONE:
-no engine internals
-no Tranny/rear diff Gear changes
-no throttlebody work
-Radiators have to comply with Stock

This should get most of your started. have any questions.. Don't hesitate to post them up.. Glad to help

Bill
