I'm at ~800 miles on mine and I've been hearing it at idle since around 400-500 miles. I only use 93 octane BP gas. Next gas tank will be Exxon 93. Maybe that will make it go away.

Another issue I've noticed is that on cold starts (after sitting overnight/8 hours) the car will sound like it misfires and it'll pop, like its running rich. After a few seconds, it sounds normal. I doubt that I already have DI seal failure at 800 miles, but its definitely odd.

ABSOLUTELY!
On my third pump and the crickets remain. Maybe they could throw in some cash for headers and performance exhaust to drown them out at idle.
Fat chance, most likely will have to live with it, really depressing.

Would wrapping the pipes of the HPFP with Thermal wraps tone down the chirping noise?

Gawd I wish toyota or Subaru or someone would pull their heads out of their arse and fix this noise problem already. I have the October 2013 pump and crickets went from light to incredibly obnoxious yesterday. The actual chirp is like a whistle now, that still chirps or pulsates. Holy God it is ridiculous.!I have a 10 series FRS and it is audible with the stereo volume on 44 playing classic rock.

Mine does it, of course, but I've just been ignoring it. Car feels fine. Noise can be a bit irritating, but it only does it at idle so I'm not sure I honestly care as long as it isn't actually hurting anything.

Mine started doing it a couple of days ago. At first, I didn't really think too much into it, but then after a while, it was noticeable. I called my local dealer, and of course, they never "heard of the problem" which is horse shit because it's been an issue since launch.

But as far as it being a problem, it isn't. It's honestly just a loud/really loud fuel pump. I know that sounds really "generic" as far as an answer, but it's true. My cousin works for Toyota and he's been dealing with this issue for a long while now. There's a TSB, etc, that has gone around with his dealership, but it's a well known issue obviously. It honestly comes down to it being a loud fuel pump like I said. I know this isn't something anyone wants to hear, but it's true. I didn't like the answer either since I JUST got mine a month ago, but what can we do. It's still a first gen car so all we can do is wait and see what will happen. Who knows, maybe Toyota will see how loyal we are by sticking with this car and get us brand new ones when everything is taken care of! Lol!

This has probably been asked before but would an aftermarket fuel pump solve the issue?

Potentially.

There are no aftermarket alternatives, if you 'stumble across one' that we 'haven't seen before' odds are it's the fuel pump that sits in the gas tank that is standard across many cars and is not the 'problem' fuel pump.

This isn't the only fuel pump to make funny noises.

2000 + miles on new (2nd replacement) pump

I'm trying not to be too hopeful. Got the this pump installed around 42K. Will check back after another 1000 or when they return.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
To all those who say "Don't worry about it," consider:

1. If it's "normal", Toyota should have given buyers a heads up. It sure didn't chirp when I bought it. As much as I like to drive the car, probably would have held off until the noise was fixed if I'd known.
2. It sounds like a belt problem that the owner can't be bothered to fix -- just rides around in a broken car.
3. It hurts the resale value significantly; I'd say by at least a couple of thousand.

Anyway, I've got my fingers crossed.

Ethanol-Free - Seems to Reduce Chirping

So, on a whim, I filled up a few days ago with a 50/50 mix of 91 octane (with up to 10% Ethanol) and 87 octane (no Ethanol) and within about 50 miles, noticed that the "chirping" sound had dissipated almost to a point where I had to really listen close to hear the sound.

Using the post about "Pure Gas" locations, found a place in Olympia (on Thurston Ave) that supposedly has 92 octane w/o Ethanol.

Going to try that next to see how it might help with that dang chirping sound.

Wanted to provide an update: seems like they still haven't resolved this issue yet. I've had crickets since I bought the car. Had the HPFP replaced at 9500 miles a few weeks back, now car is nearing 11000 miles and the crickets are back. Weather is warming up but doesn't seem to have much of an effect.

I've noticed a lot of people stick with one brand and octane for their cars and only a few have filled up with any brand gas they come across. It *seems* like the few people who fill up at random gas stations have reported less chirps.

Could it be possible that this car can benefit by filling up with different brands of fuel instead of being loyal to one or two brands of fuel?

I don't have that many miles on my 2014 yet (2,500m/4000km) and have always used Shell 91 (no Ethanol) and so far a quiet fuel pump
