1100 kg would be awesome but that really sounds like wishful thinking. i mean they can't use a lot of aluminum or CF in a car that's supposed to be low to mid $20k

Only a rumor at this point, that article didn't quote anything for it's source other than an unnamed insider which none of us are.
Needless to say if the final car is almost 2400lbs that would make it have just a bit more than a 12lb per HP ratio. Which was also one of their stated goals. If it's going to cost $25k despite being this small with as much BHP as we're hearing then maybe they did use an expensive light weight structure... I suppose it's possible. |

Yeah, the thing about that article....is its about the model coming out in the U.K......
Some confirmation that the lolScion is going to be exactly like the car in other markets would ease my mind greatly. I mean, too many times in the past have we American's been cut out on the cool and exciting engines in lieu of more tame and boring ones. Last edited by OldSkoolToys; 04-15-2011 at 03:50 AM. |

If they manage 2400lbs it would be well worth $25K.

Does the US really add that much more safety equipment?
Could anyone give me some examples of what contributes to this large weight gain?

I don't know about modern cars. On the AE86 both doors where heavily reinforced with steel to add safety in side impact, plus the windshield is completely different from the Japanese version, and heavier. Our bumpers are like park benches compared to the Japanese version (and heeavvviier). There are probably a bunch of other little things all over the car that were changed slightly for U.S. standards.
Its mostly just added reinforced steel in high impact areas, and the bumpers. |
