There are three resources: time, money and people. Any one of these can substitute for another, but you can never save on all three at once.
Example: If you have money you can save time by hiring someone else to do the job for you. If you have time you can save money by doing it yourself. If you have people, you can save a lot of time by dividing up the work. This could really cost a lot, however, if the people are not working for free. Volunteer organizations leverage this all the time; free labor saves both time and money. (Note: this last case is a special exception to the rule and doesn't work if people expect to be paid for their efforts.) What can't happen is that a job can be accomplished with no money, no time and no people. Unfortunately, my boss doesn't understand this.

I don't know why, but this made me think of something that happened over break while I was in the WV/PA area. I'm going to type it up like a campfire story because I'm that bored. My girlfriend and I were driving back from Seven Springs ski resort an were passing through Pittsburg on the way to her family's place in WV. So, We're just cruising along the hwy and had just been talking about how it was a little over time to check her oil. Then, there was a smell. It was a faint burning smell. My manly-car-man senses began tingling. Was it oil? Was it coolant? Was it wiring? More importantly, was it us? Then, just few seconds into my nervous pondering, my girlfriend spoke up: "Babe, do you smell something?" I answered nervously "Yeah, a little bit...I don't think it's us." "What is it?," she asked. Now, many of you will say I should have known at this point what sort of substance was burning. It was only slight, though, with no smoke being produced from us or anyone around us, and I just couldn't place the smell in any of the typical categories. Just then, it struck me: rubber! I was smelling burning rubber! But why? We were traveling at 70, and if there was someone rolling their tires at that speed, I would have known it. Then, from under the volvo in front of us, I saw a few faint puffs of smoke from around the exhaust. Then I was really confused, but I changed lanes because I knew something was probably about to happen. The smoke progressively got worse and I got more nervous, wanting to go ahead and pass him but my girlfriend telling me not to (was her car). After a bit, the smoke was boiling out from the front passenger wheel well and I don't understand how the driver didn't notice. THEN the car skipped a bit and the ENTIRE F***ING TIRE CAME OFF OF THE CAR WITHOUT TEARING APART and started rolling down the highway. Best of all, THE DUDE KEPT DRIVING!!! He didn't even slow down for about two miles, and eventually he just decided to casually pull over as if to see what that terrible ruckus coming from about the bonnet was -.- I just don't understand a) what happened to make the tire come off but without shredding it and b) how the guy didn't notice for so long (maybe didn't care) and c) why the rim wasn't sparking on the asphalt. you guys make think I'm wrong about the rim riding on the asphalt, but I could clearly see the edges rolling on he asphalt, and we went around a few left bends before he stopped, so I know the weight got transferred over there. Unfortunately, I was driving and couldn't take pictures and she was too freaked out to do so I guess. |

Apparently the tire was low and started to heat up. It managed to heat up to the point it actually stretched and came off the rim. It actual sort of blew off the rim all in one piece. I bet the Volvo's wasn't as intact as it may have appeared though. The difference in my story is that I knew it happened and pulled right over. Can not explain your second point as to why he kept going only he can do that. Depending on the stone content in the asphalt it is not strange at all that it did not spark. Some use a very fine stone mix that just would not create sparks big enough to see. You may have been able to see them if dark though. Now if it had been a concrete surface you would have had a show.
