The best I can tell from reading around the net there's been approximately 6000+ FT86 cars sold and somewhere around 300-600 cars affected with VVT issues so far. From the "Cam Gear Related CELs - How many miles?" poll most of the cars affected developed the issue within the first 500 miles. There's a pretty good chance that if you've moved past that point you might be ok.

Im in the same boat as driving and checking - is it this stop? Can anyone just share who got it whether they were driving aggressive, overly passive, clogged air filter, whatever. Everyday i drive to work and back now feels like shit is gonna happen. I want to drive the car the way i want but i find myself too much babysitting it to avoid the cel. If the cel strikes as a lighting, i will accept that im at scions mercy, otherwise i want to extend this cel as long as they come up with a solution. I have a 6 cyl boxer in subaru tribeca and it has lights too. Clean air filter seems to help, but just temporarily, 3 months or so. Any warning pointers welcome. Stay cool my friends.
This car seems to have an inferior air flow. To me it feels it collects all the smells from other cars and i would not be suprised if not enough air gets into the engine when you drive slow but at high revs which would cause the fuel not burn up fully and kick out misfires from unburnt fuel. Thats why i wonder how people drive it leading to the cel. Last edited by Vb; 09-14-2012 at 02:03 AM. |

I guess I will park the car away and start it once a week just to keep the battery going, until this CEL true cause and fix unfold. If/when the "CEL lighting" strikes my engine, I can roll to my dealer and know I will have a good fix waiting. From what I have read so far, it seems like a combination of lower tolerance of various parts, after broken in, will have this happen first...to your point, different field usage and driving habits can added to it...and a new ECU timing (wider the margin of the engine working) may be the true fix...that is also why I think eventually it will happen to all car produced (hopefully not, and hopefully I am guessing wrong here)

Thanks for this info . . . because I haven't yet figured out how a hardware problem could be causing the idle issues. Unless it's something like a sensor that is suffering intermittent failures. But a cam sprocket? |

I thought the ECU was further down in the official repair flowchart and was a step to perform if the codes came back again? Replace ECU if the other components have been replaced..

*** Major update for me.
Just got off the phone with my dealership to see what parts they were still missing. They said they received the cam gear and it came damaged. They called Scion HQ, and according to my service manager they told him that it's a good thing they didn't replace the cam gear/sprocket along with the other parts and that Scion has issued a service update which is a newer revised ECU & flash.
