On today's episode of First World Problems:

I've been trying to build up a nice movie collection. I buy everything blu-ray. I'm obsessed. I have a nice TV and sound system and I buy the best format and turn my nose up at anything less than blu-ray. Well, now it looks like the best format will be Blu-ray 4K UHD.

Get used to it. Every time you focus on the latest and greatest tech something better will come along just when you are not expecting it!

At one point in time I had 200 8 track tapes and then cassettes came along and I couldn't even buy a player anymore.

Gah, I can't even imagine. And I wouldn't call myself a movie buff. I love having a nice collection, but it's never been very big (I buy them when I can but they're expensive and I'm cheap). I'm a TV person though. I am obsessed with having a nice TV for some reason. The 4K TVs have been tempting me for a while, but my current TV is barely two years old, if that so I can't justify the upgrade.

I think I'll skip a generation. I'll upgrade to whatever is after 4K.

Many years ago (I don't remember exactly how many) we bought one of the very first top of the line Samsung plasma Smart tvs. Got a smoking deal on a full package that included extended warranty which is something that I would never normally buy. Every few years since something minor has gone wrong (a bright line that was almost invisible, fussy sound and rare interment shuts downs) and we have collected on that warranty. Three times now we have gone in and they have said "oh we just replace it but they don't make that one anymore take this one". We have gone up about 12"s and to vastly superior tech since the newer ones were always a step or two better. The fun part is that we have never had to pay a cent for the tvs so we just pay for the extended warranty (about $100) on the next one to keep the cycle going. Will be interesting to see what they replace the current one with since they don't make plasmas anymore.

That's... Actually pretty freaking awesome. I'm kind of jealous.

I bought one of the first LCD HD TVs when flatscreens were relatively new. It didn't have a resolution rating (720p, 1080p). It was just an HD TV. I paid $900 for a 40" flatscreen. It wasn't even a name brand. It was an HP. This was either before blu-ray, or right around the beginning of it. I had an upconverting DVD player. I think the player was $80 and the HDMI cable was like $85 haha

I'd hold out for a 70" curvilinear LED 4K set.

Well it hasn't failed yet and I believe there is 3 or 4 years left on the warranty so maybe just maybe ...

I don't watch TV shows anymore and I usually use my tv for game or movie (which is maybe once a wk) so warranty won't help much I think... but IF I do use my TV as much as my monitor, but I'll buy warranty to get some upgrade, if/when tv breaks.

I worked for Sears repairing home electronics stuff from '93-'96. An older gentleman once brought in an 8-track player and was politely turned down by the person working the counter at the time. He was crestfallen because his entire music collection consisted of 8-tracks. I approached him and agreed to look at his player under the condition he agree the work was strictly time & parts but no warranty. Also, I needed a couple tapes for test.

Long story short, after adapting some VCR parts and a thorough cleaning/alignment, the deck was running like new. The guy became a hugely loyal customer and steered his friends to us as well. Each new customer would relay a message about the enduring health of the famous 8-track player.

Wish I knew you back in the day. Those things were so prone to failure it was ludicrous. I would go through 2 or 3 a year of the under dash ones in my cars. Usually they just stopped changing tape position and would just sit there and click.

Tape deck, door window, laser welder,... gotta tweak 'em all to get them to work just right. Story of my life.

I bet when you finished with the laser welder, it worked like the one Goldfinger tried to use to cut James Bond in half:

JB: "Do you expect me to talk?"

GF: "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die."
