Love it. Front end looks nice.

Half the parts would come from other cars in the lineup, which would lower production costs. Keep it all basic with the mindset that the people who buy it are just going to modify it anyways. No need for big 18" wheels and crazy nonsense.
It'd be nice to have a midship, but it wouldn't sell well at all. Consumers will readily buy a Porsche or Lotus, but a midship japanese car will be overlooked.

I agree. I'm just speaking from a personal sense on what I would want to see the car be. I have yet to see anything that I personally like from a visual standpoint come from these JP car makers over the years.

The IDX concept looked awful. The FT1 was not all that great from the a pillar forward, the Honda thing looked stupid. This SRF thing looks like a pissed off fiat 500. Of course this is just my opinion, but I just don't get what the styling departments are thinking.

I would totally own one of these if they brought it over to the States. The fact that Toyota is dapping the sports car waters again is amazing.

Also who cares if it's slower, does it make you smile when you drive it?

That's what matters in my book.

Also it should be noted, like the Honda S660, A lot of people here trashed it but once the reviews came out positive people started changing their opinions. I predict this will be the same.
I really appreciate Toyota taking this bold approach with fun to drive and designed not by committee. You'd assume that since they've started to give their passenger cars the same fascia designs that it'd translate into their niche cars too, but it's nice to see the gt86 and fsr have designs that don't conform to their current design language. (I think Honda ruined the new nsx by trying to give it that chrome beak they've thrown onto all of their cars.)

I'm thinking it's going to be based off of the Miata. Very similar dimensions, and certain placements of interior bits make me think so too:

Then small details, such as rear tow hook cover and exhaust placement:

If the S-FR is indeed based off the Miata chassis, I can see how in the photo above they made room for the +2 rear seats. The width of the dash shelf is quite a bit shorter (maybe 4-6 inches) than on the Miata (look at the distance from the center vent from the base of the windshield). Ditch the folding top mechanism and storage area and there's another 6-8 inches. So you have a good food of length that can be used for what is essentially an emergency seat under a tall hatch. This could definitely work.

Maybe the world will finally get its Miata coupe after all.

This is the lower model below ours. Also the S-FR name was trademarked almost a 5-6 months ago by Toyota. I see this being bought for younger kids just look at the shouty color combo and the music selection controls on the steering wheel, seems to be a less serious FT-86.

The wife and I have indistinct plans of spending a year in France with side trips to other countries. Even though it is not happening any time soon I have already gone looking for a suitable car. Having driven in Paris and Oporto I was thinking the 86/BRZ too big. Seriously, trying to park in these cities can be a challenge. My favourite considerations were a Fiesta ST or a Polo of some sort. Smallish but not too cramped for luggage. The fact that they are both fwd was part of the compromise for a small car.

Then bam!! I see this car and I'm thinking it would be the perfect vehicle for me given the criteria. I would have liked to have seen a little more power but meh. I was driving a diesel Pug 206 with 90 hp!!!! and still managed to have fun in the twisties.

I hope it makes it to market.

At first I was really horrified by the way it looks but after going back and forth on it I'm down for it. Lighter, Front-Mid Engine, RWD and seating for 2 1/2 people? Bring it on Toyota. Reminds me of a larger Suzuki Cappuccino.

Wow. This all actually makes a lot of sense, especially considering the rumours from six months ago of the next generation Toyota 86 being based off of the MX-5 chassis. In the end, it was this new coupe all along.
