I'll likely be waiting for the Subaru version in Spring assuming the Scion doesn't have better parts/suspension/etc. At least then I'll be able to work on the price of the car with my contacts at the local subie dealer.

IMO, if this car is simply a RWD version with a more powerful engine than the celica GTS it should be priced at $22,999-23,999. I think thats reasonable since that's about 1-1.5k more than a civic Si. And unlike the civic which has other counterparts this car will only have one under a different brand.

That's the thing. We're not sure if it's better engine than Celica engine. Official's haven't release the final spec yet...

If limited supply and timing is of any concern, just visit one of the bigger dealerships in your area. They will likely let you place a deposit for a spot in line to pick from their first shipment. I did this with the tC, was second in line (behind one of the employees) and put my name down for black or flint mica. They couldn't guarantee that they would be able to get my colors on the first truck but they ended up getting 2 black, 1 flint mica, and 2 others (I think white). They called me once the boat was unloaded. I went with the flint mica, walked in, test drove, signed and left without any issue. I think the deposit was only $200, but I think up to $500 is reasonable. It was refundable as well (and should be since the supply will allow them to just move it to the next person if you cancel).

Except it's not a Toyota so the MSRP should be less due to branding .

Of course it's still a Toyota, but it isn't a Toyota. When you buy a Lexus you're buying a Toyota, but does it cost the same as a Toyota? No. Same idea only reversed. When you buy a Scion you're still buying a Toyota, but it won't (and shouldn't) draw the same price tag that the exact same car with a Toyota emblem would.

^That's the perception but xB and tC prices have crept up. The tC costs more than the base price of the Yaris, Corolla, Matrix, and Tacoma. A certain Nissan sports car costs way more than any vehicle coming from the premium Infiniti division.

I just hope Scion follows through with that buzzword they use over and over in their PR: "affordable."

You have to compare the tC to the last gen Celica. Compare chassis codes between the two, not completely certain of the lineage. But the MSRP for the base Celica was more than the base tC, I believe it was a $1500 difference and the tC has a bigger engine, etc.

With the way they spammed the import scene at the time, I would bet it was for Tuner Coupe.

The Celica was built on a new chassis designed and manufactured exclusively for itself and new engines (1ZZ-FE and a 2ZZ-GE higher compression engine with Lift technology, tuned by Yamaha). Its launch price in '99 reflected those costs which stuck for its entire production. The tC was built on a pre-existing chassis used by the Avensis and powered by a pre-existing 2AZ-FE Camry engine (and I believe the current gen still "borrows" major components from Toyotas). Its launch price in '04 reflected those savings. Also, you can't compare their pricing since the tC was the generational successor to the Celica. It's like comparing MkIII to MkIV Supra prices. Or the '05 MkI tC $16,545 price to the '11 MkII tC $18,275 price.

The FR-S is a special case. It is splitting costs of chassis and powertrain with Subaru. But globally, the FR-S will be a Toyota. An FT-86 sold in Japan equipped with X options should cost the same as a Scion FR-S with the same X equipment +/- things beyond their control like import fees, etc. So there should be a slight cost difference but not arbitrarily based on branding.
