I will take the CTR and save a bunch of money, thank you very much ![]() Horsepower wars are ridiculous, I would rather have a balanced car, that will hold up to the test of time. Would you rather own that Mercedes or a CTR out of warranty? ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

A 3100lb FWD 300+Hp car, I dunno, I'm sure it drives great. But I dunno, I just struggle calling it balanced even though it is apparently. And I dunno about the test of time thing, seems like Honda is quietly having issues with their turbo cars, and historically Honda transmissions when mated to anything with torque has a tendency of grenading. And that's even before we get to the styling, don't think that will stand the test of time... if it ever has. |

2nd gen FT86 (GR86)

These are all reasons why I’d have the Golf R. They sell under MSRP, and after a $1200 intake and tune it makes 360hp, which you can actually use with the rear wheels being driven. It will smash the type R with money left in your pocket. You can add power to the type R all you want, all it’s going to do is shred those front tires more, overheat, and maybe grenade a gearbox. The VW can handle over 500 hp on the stock motor and gearbox. The golf stands to gain much more from adding power than the civic can hope for. |

Volkswagens/Audi's are the only "affordable" foreign car I have wrenched on( I was ASE at one point and know plenty of other techs) that literally have problems for no reason crop up. Oh that windshield washer fluid sensor for idiots...yeah that doesn't work any more with only 20k on your car. Bad injector at 6k..routine. Worse return on investment for $30k. Yeah Golf R may be fast, but I would rather buy a BRZ from an auction and shoe horn in a K24 and call it a day.
My two cents from a guy who actually has wrenched for a living. Ps- RWD...buy a certified pre-owned mustang.

Just a note. You wrench for a living, so you get exposed to a biased sample of the cars that have problems and therefore come in to get fixed. You don’t see the ones that are problem free. I’ve had multiple VW/Audis, even from the infamous 1998-2002 era, and they were all mostly problem free. Granted that’s hardly a large simple random sample too, but it should be less skewed towards the high failure rate group that mechanics see often. |

The only Type R I’ve been able to drive is the Integra, and there was something magical about that car. When Honda wants to turn the dial up they don’t go into it half hearted. The current Civic is already a really good car. I can’t comment on how great the CTR is to drive, but knowing what they do with anything that has a Type R badge, it’s probably a blast. They shouldn’t be as much fun as they are. Yeah they’ve had some issues with fuel getting in the engine oil, but it’s difficult to know how big the problem is from internet forums. And I wouldn’t worry about the transmission, especially if you take time to let the transmission fluid warm up before shifting fast, and changing the fluid on time. Those are all good points. With not a big investment the Golf R will annihilate the CTR in a drag race. The Golf R is in a lot of ways the ultimate affordable daily driver. It also doesn’t attract attention like the CTR. ![]() It would be interesting to drive them back to back. The steering in the CTR will probably feel sharper, and turn in is better. It’s difficult to tune out the understeering bias of the Golf R. It’s quite a bit heavier than the Civic. I think my heart would want to vote for the CTR, and the practical side the Golf R. I guess you can’t go wrong with either! And I would get an STI anyway. ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Are you talking about the MK6 or MK7? I haven’t driven a MK7 yet, but I remember the press being over the moon with how neutral the MK7 with DCC is. Clarkson also praised the TT that’s on the same chassis for the total lack of understeer. |

Turn in is improved for sure with the MK7, but it can’t completely hide its weight. Especially transitioning from corner to corner. I think VW worked some magic to get it to handle as well as it does. I’ve had seat time in the MK6 and MK7 Golf R, and the the 2nd gen Audi TT and 3rd gen Audi TTS and TTRS. My brother currently has a 3rd gen TTRS, which is on the MQB platform with the MK7. It’s a technical wonder, and it feels like it’s a mini super car in some ways. Quattro and DSG (or whatever Audi calls it) combine to make a great car. But for lack of a better term you feel a little disconnected from the road, and it’s not as tossable of course as a good RWD car. It reigns in the fun quickly. I guess it’s more along the lines of the GTR. Not as powerful as the GTR, but it’s a technical wonder. That doesn’t always equal fun to me, especially when you consider the price. I love old school Japanese cars (90’s to early 2000’s) so I’ve never bonded with most VW or Audi stuff. The only German car I’ve owned was a new MK5 GTI, and I did like it. I didn’t love it though, and only kept it for a couple of years. I regretted selling my WRX to get it. I know there has been a lot of evolution from the MK5 to MK7 generations.
