Yeah, I have tried several varieties of Glenrothes. Passable, but over priced. IMHO etc.

about Glenrothes I don't know prices may vary by region but I have found them to be in the more reasonably priced scotches around here (Had paid 130$ for my 1985 and a 15yr old lagavulin/aberlour/oban would basically run me the same if not more) guess I just got lucky the few times I bought them.

I had that most annoying part (the baud rate negotiation for you old school nerds) as a ring tone for a while.
Drove my colleagues crazy when I left my phone on my desk and went bird watching in secretary land. Which I did a lot. Back then. Not anymore. No.

Speaking of phoning it in...that's how we met.


It was a dating service where you dialed a telephone number, listened to voice recorded profiles, wrote down a code, and then you mailed a letter to the company with the code on the envelope. They then forwarded to the recipient who would call you back at the number you provided if interested.


We both did it as a goof. She did it because her sister wanted to but was too scared to do it by herself. I did it because the company left a business card on my car (the original Olivia, a '85 MR2) with the words "Dude, nice car!" scribbled on the back of it.


I still have the recording of her message (its on the "Volume 1" disk) and she still has the letter.

Yeah, that's the part I meant. The negotiation sequence. I still sometimes dial him when he's standing in a crowd. Funny to see the reactions.

I had a part time job in 1984 with a company in Austin that received a one-page fax, once a day, from a subsidiary in Memphis. It was my job to babysit the "thermofax" while the document was sent. It stank, like burning electrical insulation. Also, the transmission rate was 300 baud. It took 15 minutes to send one page, printed on a rotating drum with a special sheet of thermal paper used. Even then, it seemed incredibly slow. After it was sent, I had to call the Memphis office to reassure them that the one page document had actually made it. CAT3 wiring and all...
