Can it all just be to bad programming in the ECU/ECM regarding the VVT part? We all know computers crash for no obvious reason
Could be possible also seeing some posts where they just changed the cam sprocket and ocv, and still got error code.
When they changed the ECM everything worked out? Maybe there's a new software in the new ECM?
They swapped out my hard parts and still the same issue. It was not until they gave me the newer ecu part number that the problem was resolved. Visconti confirmed it had a newer factory flash that had not seen and that he was going to have to retune for me. My fix was 3000 miles ago and doing good.

Do you have the part number of the new ECU handy? I want to check mine.

I would take it back and drive it with the CEL/TRAC for now until the flash becomes available.

Ask them to call the tech line at Corporate and they'll probably give you the answers. I wouldn't have the mechanics taking apart crap and replacing something thats resolved with a software fix.

So Scion headquarters just called me. They didn't really say anything that filled me with confidence. They asked what I expected. I said I expect to get my car back working correctly in new condition without the smells of oil or coolant, and I don't want to have a repeat of this problem. He asked me if they could do anything else for me like make my next payment or extended warranty. I said I would like dealer installed foglights, a rear spoiler, and an extended warranty. He said they would take care of me.

I also just spoke with the service writer at Toyota and he told me 3-4 weeks backorder on the parts they ordered for me, but he wouldn't tell me what they ordered. I just hope the 811 ECU is in that order!!!

I understand your point there, but you could be doing longterm damage that may not show up for a few years (like after a warranty period).

Audi should have recalled the 2004-2006 S4 due to bad cam adjusters on the intake VVT. They quietly ignored the issue, and most S4s of those years need major engine repairs by 75K, and many are simply ruined and need to be replaced...conveniently after the warranty has expired. My 2004 S4 was an absolute nightmare the last 1-2 years of ownership. As soon as it hit 65K, it was all downhill....primarily out of bad intake VVT components causing a chain of issues.

The long list of problems is from bad cats (from shooting raw fuel into them due to misfires), scored cylinder walls (due to other contributing issues, but misfires add by allowing unburnt fuel to cause oil dilution), a myriad of timing chain/adjuster/tensioner problems, grenaded motors, power loss, and 5 figure repair bills. The BHF 4.2L V8 in that car lists from Audi at $13K; if you have to replace it.

If it were me, I would drive it *sparingly* with a running misfire problem until it gets fixed; assuming you plan on keeping it beyond 50-60K. High compression motors and misfires create a toxic mix for the oil. The effects of which may not show up for a few years, but in an all aluminum motor....they will most likely show up if there has been any lubrication impacts..... If you must drive it daily, I would routinely check the oil to see if it smells strongly of raw fuel. If so, change it or get it changed.

My $0.02
