With the 370z & GT-R the column shifter is better suited for a transmission and people who aren't in a high speed full lock but change gears before and after a corner..not during.

In my RX7, the TQ band falls off pretty bad during cornering and kicking the clutch to gain power makes you loose momentum, but its easy to switch gears while sideways to offset the losses.
shuffle your hands. since the paddles never move, your hands are always near the paddles...

wheel mounted paddles work well on forumla cars that have less than 1 turn lock-to-lock... on road cars with multiple turns lock-to-lock and power steering, column mounted is better. wheel mounted is a cheap way to incorporate paddles without actual paddles. they are more like buttons and usually made out of cheap feeling plastic...

the paddle shifters on my IS250 move with the steering wheel.

Dumbest design, I know.

I heard they were testing out voice-activated shifting, but apparently "shift" sounded too much like "shit"... and New Yorkers would have spent their entire commute in 6th gear.

Yeah, and the paddles on my Z are quite a bit longer compared to paddles from the images seen here. That's just another thing that's going to make it harder to shift with paddles. One, I won't remember which one is up/down. Two, they're going to be too small to find anyway haha.

I love the column mounted idea. I'm driving a street car, not a formula 1 car...

Solution: buy a manual!

hmm... are Ferrari and GTR paddles on the column of the wheel. I think the ones on a Porsche the actual Paddles like Cayman R are on the Column.

Ferrari and Nissan put their paddles on the column, and Porsche has their paddles on the wheel.

audi and bmw also use wheel mounted paddles. maybe its a german thing? however the "german" lambos use column mounted paddles...

also the new mclaren mp4-12c is the only exotic off the top of my head that uses wheel mounted paddles vs column mounted. but also remember that they have a new rocker style paddle system where you can both upshift and downshift with the same paddle...

Here's my take: Your hands are on the wheel, not on the column, so I don't see why you would you want the paddles where your hands aren't.

Where are the paddles on a Formula1 steering wheel? Case closed!

I was thinking along those same lines but my cars have all been true sticks so I wasn't sure if I was missing something. If anything, on a column paddle, I would imagine if you were trying to shift with the wheel turned, the tendency would be to move your hand towards the paddle and could inadvertently change the steering position.

Circuit Driving Instructors usually tell you to keep your hands on the wheel for maximum feel of where and what the front wheels are doing, so with that in mind you want the paddles to be on the wheel so you don't have to lift a hand off the wheel.

Wake up to the real world. Virtually all cars these days are automatic or automated transmissions, including Ferrari's, Nissan GT-R, Lamborghini's, etc. Be thankful the FR-S will be even offered in a 6MT, because it will become very rare in the near future.

Virtually all cars today are boring econoboxes. Doesn't mean that sport cars will become "very rare".
