Just some thoughts...

I pine for true audio fidelity but have given up on it long ago. Along that whole chain of events from technical to sensory, I am right there with you.

I wonder how many of us have had the privilege of listening to an unmolested recording of a live performance sitting right smack in the middle of a well-configured sound stage.

edit for others reading: It doesn't have to be expensive at all.

Loved my LaserDisc player when I had one in the mid 80's. Honestly didn't matter that it was only broadcast quality because that was all TVs at the time were capable of anyway. Cool that you have a huge collection.

Just found out that my house just became eligible for 2gigabit Internet service from Xfinity/Comcast. Lost interest when I realized it was $300 a month. Guess I don't need it as bad as I thought I did, by about 2/3rds.

Oh, I've got that right here in my man cave.
Deep Purple - Nobody's Perfect on a NAD turntable hooked up to a Denon amp with tall&heavy 4-way Snell speakers.
3 tracks, including "Smoke on the Water" recorded live in Oslo on 22 August 1987. I was there, right in front of the stage and it sounds just as good, right here right now. Just not quite as loud.
The system is old, the record is old, and that is what makes it so good.

Fantastic. Looking forward to hearing it. Mrs. Ultra has been thinking of Ireland but I'm hinting at Norway.

Hey, why not do both?
If you've never been to Dublin it has my highest recommendation. One of the few places outside of Norway I'd seriously consider living. Awesome people, fantastic bars.

What are you looking for in a vacation like this? Culture, nature, shopping, food, rafting, rock climbing, what?

Let me know what you plan and maybe we can form a travel group. I just have to hint at travel and the wife is standing at the door with her suitcase. She has never been to Europe so it would be an easy sell.
