It was dicey enough renting videotape. I couldn't imagine the odds of getting both a good tape and VCR.

I only vaguely remember my family renting VHS tapes and games from Blockbuster back when they were still in business.

I worked for Sears for a few years after the Navy, fixing all the home electronic stuff. People beat the shit out of their VCRs.

And that was probably when they were like $500 for a basic one. Which of course was why people would actually rent them.

To be fair, VCRs were never all that durable. Here's a hunk of cheap plastic, silicon, and motors that you stick another big thing of cheap plastic into.

The later ones were yes. The early ones were far from a chunk of cheap plastic. Those things were bricks.

I had one throughout my childhood that was pretty much all metal.
You pressed a button and the tray/holder popped up from the top. It was pretty sweet... gonna see if I can somehow find a picture of it.

Mid 80s when I was stationed overseas, I got a really special hi-fi VCR specifically because the audio input levels could be adjusted without any AGC. The bandwidth and dynamic range were unsurpassed at the time.

I used it to copy a TON of my friends' CDs.

The reality is a certain percentage of the population has zero concept of fragility. If it doesn't go on the first try they just push harder.
