I bet that's exactly what they're doing because 270hp and >3000 lbs is wrx territory and if it costs >$5k more then a wrx nobody will buy it.

Because there are no lightweight awd cars available in the USA in over 20 years. If I want an AWD >3000# econobox I can buy an Impreza/wrx/sti, golf R/A3, 2 series, mini, or Mazda 3, or used brings a focus RS, or lancer into the equation. That formula isn't special at all, what makes the gr Yaris cool is that it is 270hp awd in a package lighter than an 86.
