I paid $25,738 for my 2020 new. So... in my case: No.

Nice. My dealership sends me those monthly but the mileage limit is always about 50 miles under what I have on it. I was surprised my last offer was also about $1,500 over what I paid... and I think it's only towards a Crosstrek.

Lol, that dealer is probably the only place that it's also 'void where prohibited'

Well... There are plenty of us out there who haven't had any support from our parents the second we hit 18 and moved out.

You win in ANY economy by being highly skilled in a job people require.

And honestly, being highly skilled just requires you to dedicate yourself to something, it doesn't even need that you be some very smart person or hold a lot of degrees or anything really.

There is certainly a category of such people. The rest of them are hard working people that paid every single penny of this car by their own hard work.

I think the second gen is a great option for those who have been holding out on getting a twin because of either looks, practicality, or the issues with 13-15 models, and the increasing prices of the 16+ models. You can't go wrong with either, with the latter version being improved for track/daily use, not to mention improved interior. Not saying that there won't be issues with 2nd gen, or that all 1st gens are bad, because all vehicles have some level of unreliability.

In my case, I think on keeping mine for the sole purpose of nostalgia, and that I hope to pass it to my future kid that I hope shares my passion. My next vehicle is going to be a hatchback or simply a bigger coupe (Mazda I'm looking at you with the RX-Vision).
You can have as much fun with a 2nd gen as you can with a 1st. Is all about what your purposes are and how much you're willing to spend for some smiles per gallon.

Totally agree. But I make it a habit of not counting other peoples money. Honestly, as long as it was not obtained illegally or taking advantage of someone, I could careless if you earned it, got it from your rich uncle, won lotto or you were the first to buy Shibu inu coin or the like.

Who you are and what you do with the money is more important than where you got it. Remember, even people who got generational money in many cases that money came from hard work.

I am sticking with Gen1 for now. Saving the money for a project car. But I will leave final judgement after I get to test drive a Gen2.

What do you mean by saying project car? Race track car?

My BRZ is AT and gets 33 mpg and I need it to do my 119 mile round trip commute about 3-4 days a week. I need this car to be reliable so I am just header and tune and exhaust. So no more mods really.

My 04 WRX wagon is stage 2 with 149k on her. Not sure if I want to mod her anymore because she’s fast enough for the street and not wanting to blow that EJ205.

Both paid off and really it’s just detailing and maintenance for both and that is boring. I have a mod addiction problem for sure.

Turn 50 next year. So I need a new project/weekend toy with maybe a track day/autox once or twice a year. I have been saving for awhile. But prices are too high now.

I am leaning towards a 981 Cayman S, always wanted one, but not sure I want to spend over 50k right now.

I've been in the Subaru game since 2006ish... so about 15 years now (whoa). I've had GC Imprezas, GF wagon Imprezas, a GD WRX I still have. And have driven a few GRs, 2004 GD STI, and newer a few 2015+ models, stock and modded. So pretty much every version of the USDM Imprezas we got here, turbo and non-turbo.

The GC's back in the 90's and early 2000's were raw. When the GD came out, it got a little bit bigger and more comfortable, with more features and safety equipment. When the next generation of the GR's hit in 2006/2009, people found them to be again, larger, more safety stuff, heavier, and they feel less raw and 'rally car' like. Same deal with the 2015+, more refined, less raw, etc. Each generation is more refined, comfortable, safer.

With the first gen twins, they're raw. Kinda clanky transmissions and suspensions, no sound deadening, a few rattles here and there. Some people might not like this, but it gives the car character and you feel connected to it. Kinda like it's more of a 'race car' vs some luxury car.

The 2nd gen, from what I've heard, it more refined. Yes, they fixed the power problem, but more or less the suspension is the same. Hell, the front swaybar, again from what I've seen of the first people tracking them, swaps right over. The cabin is more refined, it's more comfortable, rides better. Transmissions is less janky.

... and that's all good. It shows progression. Why have a 2nd gen if it's the exact same? So you can't really hate on it and it'll age well like the GD and GR Imprezas did. If there ever is a 3rd gen down the line, you'll see it be more refined, more comfortable, ride better, etc.

If you like the more raw experience, get a first gen - probably a 2017+ refresh to get the more updated dash and interior. If you've been holding out and want a more comfortable ride and extra power, the 2nd gen is probably for you.

981S is the one, as far as Caymans go, but don't discount the "base" non-S version, it's pretty much the same car with a bit less hp...

BUT, they still look and *feel* biggish and heavyish relative to an FT86! The 981's electric steering is good but *slow* relative to FT86. And Porsche seems to make it a design goal to make their cars feel as boring as possible at anything under 8/10ths whereas the Ft86 is *fun* at 1/10th just tooling around!

981 Cayman S is just a few mods away from being a legit budget supercar. But our cars are more fun on the street

Something to think about...

My 2014 Cayman suffered from what a lot of modern performance cars suffer from, tall gearing. Second gear in my 86 matches first gear in the Cayman.

I know what you mean. I’ve read a lot about them and many people who have driven both prefer the twins because of fun. I would pull the trigger and try it if the 981S was around 35k. They are around 50k. Just seems like too much. So I keep saving. A few have said to get the base because you can ring it out more on the street. Another thing to think about.
