Scion was purely an experiment from Toyota to test the waters with models using different product offered in overseas markets, different marketing, different content packaging, and different financing tactics. While it WAS marketed to the younger crowd in the beginning, the second generation of their core vehicles quickly changed their brand ethos and moved to a larger, more comfortable, more expensive vehicle. Unfortunately the consumer gap between "funky" and "practical" is wider than the grand canyon so their experiment quickly came to an end.

The FR-S was only badged as a Scion because their not so bright CEO begged (fought tooth and nail) for new product to reinvigorate the brand. Unfortunately they listened to him and the FR-S never got the beginning in life that it deserved. Had it initially been badged and sold as a Toyota, I have no doubt it would have more market share than it does now. At least they're giving it a second go.

Toyota learned a lot from the Scion experiment. They learned a lot of WHAT NOT TO DO. Good riddance Scion.

Now you can understand why people like me decided to swapped those cheap badges and horrible halogen headlights right away and side markers Because I wanted it the way Toyota should've bought it to the states.

Says who that Mazda advised Toyota? They do not have any connection in the sports car business AFAIK. Mind you, Mazda is supplying their Mazda 2 sedan from Mexico for the Yaris so who knows.

I think ultrasuede is associated with premium quality and luxury, just what Toyota has to move the interior upscale.

Boy racer is carbon fibre IMHO, like in MY13.

You might want to search this, as mazda and toyota got together, mazda did advise toyota on the 2017 set up. It was said that they collaborated to further improve their platforms and the end goal was to strengthen the japanese car industry. Makes sense since korea is nocking on their door.

Hmmmm... I would think if news like that was legit it would have been of enough interest to enthusiasts to have been mentioned in at least one of the major auto blogs, never saw it.

Having owned both ...... my take is that if you want a roadster, but a MX5, if you want a coupe, buy a 86.

See how simple it can be .....

Weird I actually like the way the car looks from all the unofficial media Iv'e seen.
Photographers insist on shooting cars from door handle height, which is not where normal human being see cars from. It drives me insane. From roof height and higher, it looks much different.

Which mx5 did you own? Have you considered the new nd?

Leaning now towards the 86 because
it has a spare tyre.....

We drove a 2006 (NC) for 88,000 touring miles in 8 years, all over the western and midwestern US and western Canada.

We have had our 2013 FRS for 3 years and 16,000 mile (yes, we are slowing down).

We traded to NC for the FRS because mrs humfrz tired of the "wind in the hair" roadster touring. So, we got an FR-S which is a bit larger (more room to nap in), is a coupe (a bit quieter - can talk & listen to music easier) and has more storage for traveling.

If I could find a younger co-pilot () ...... I'd get a ND (with a retractable hardtop).

The rh nd would be awesome. Best of both worlds. As for finding younger co-pilot, hehe that would be a double whammy.
