I really don't know what you guys are talking about. The Alcantara part of my seats are like new at almost 3 years old.

Leather seats on the other hand for me will usually start to look like crap by this time.

Unless they did a better job at insulation? Though that would make the car gain weight?

I don't believe enough stuff was changed to make it a luxury car. It's just very slightly less race car and slightly more commuter friendly

I will miss the noisy, bumpy little spaz that is the FR-S for about another week.

I'm hoping Toyota sells them by the truckload.
I said for a while that they would go more in the quasi luxury coupe route eventually and then the RS2 came out and I knew exactly where they were headed.

Ads went from this:
[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pe2DOGmY5fw"]SCION FRS - Awesome Commercial - YouTube[/ame]

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTcRWzAwL70"]2013 Scion FR-S "Driving Is Back" Commercial - YouTube[/ame]

To this:
[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WASX8fCU4kQ"]Foot Model ft. the Scion FR-S Release Series 2.0 - YouTube[/ame]

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gUcMD1mW08"]Tiny Gold Bouncers ft. the Scion FR-S Release Series 2.0 - YouTube[/ame]

They are NOT after the same demographics here and I can't wait for the 17 commercials and see what direction they head in.

That went from real to fake in no time.

There's a recent post with an interview with Tada, and he said the chassis has been stiffened considerably, and I believe it. I don't know what has been done to the suspension between '16 FR-S and '17 86, but it is WAY better than the '13 I had. That was the very first thing I noticed of the lot was how solid it felt. Some new-car bias, maybe, we'll see.

Edit: HRH Clarkson had nothing but nasty things to say about a very expensive car that had a stiff chassis and stiff suspension. Maybe they saw that episode as well. Anyone taking an 86 racing is going to toss that stuff anyway, so why not make it somewhat less abusive for a bit borader appeal? It's way more settled and faster through places that had a stock FR-S feeling more than a little upset. Anyway, time will tell. It's better all the way 'round as far as I'm concerned, except for the front fang-face. That has to go, and is a mistake. Or maybe a sop to the racecar crowd, because aggressive.

Nobody would ever mistake it for a luxury car, but no Toyota buyer would have looked at it twice after a drive if nothing had changed other than badges. Compared to a '13 FR-S, though, it feels like a totally different car.

I just wish they had left the body alone.

A car has to have a certain level of suckage and crudeness to qualify as "real", I guess. Next you will tell me it has a sound-tube for fake engine audio luxury!

No luxury in mine either and I don't feel like I got ripped off, a bargain really. If I wanted perceived luxury I would have stuck with my top trim Golf GTI but that is a bean counter's car.

I don't like how the general direction the Toyota marketing is heading with the 86. Why marketing thinks upscaling is always the answer to tanking sales is beyond me, must be a hipster thing.

The only luxurious thing I want in the car is a push button start and that fancy touch unlock

The more they add to the car the wider the audience. The interior was probably a weak point in terms of content in the first year. Then they systematically added more and more content with each model year. Shark fin, knee and speaker pads, auto on/off lights, etc.

The added features and the removal of the red wings on the seats takes the car further from the boy racer look to me. That in my mind is an indication Toyota is targeting a wider swath of the market beyond the racer types, more toward things women and people that just like nice stuff in cars want.

It makes sense that the big push for content comes at the end of the first gen service life. They have manufactured enough to reach an economy of scale, they can afford to add a bit of content. Also, that this coincides with re-branding to Toyota.

Maybe I am missing something here, but now that the 86 is a Toyota model, why is it still mono spec when Subaru also has an upgraded model?
Sounds like there might be an arrangement where Toyota sticks with the base spec and Subaru probably sells a lot more of the premium models than base.

With Scion gone, I'd like to see a really upscale model option. All the features of the limited models but available to order. If the Supra is going to have a high starting price, there could still be a $35 CD twin (maybe $29K US)

Also, I couldn't help but notice the price disparity between Toyota and Subaru on comparable units in Canada.

That suede on the passenger side is more boy racer than anything before it.

I think the changes are exactly what toyota needed to do. Soften it just a touch to make it a better daily driver. As someone already pointed out in a earlier post people will always modd it to as they see fit. Toyota wins both ways.
