No. Although I have no doubt people will come of with some bizarre quasi physics to say why the reality is they just look better. People started to equate low sidewall tires with "performance" and the wheel got bigger and bigger. The top performance cars for decades all ran on 14 inch wheels.

OK, I figured it was just for looks but know nothing about physics so figured I'd ask. Maybe it was an initiative by the tire companies to sell tires at double the price haha

Mind you we often ran 14s on the front and 16s on the rear.

Well, shorter sidewalls are stiffer, so they can corner better... however ride quality suffers and in general larger wheels equate to more unsprung rotational mass - which is bad for handling, acceleration, and braking...

@Tcoat's example is not what you would call a real corner carver, but I do agree that this is a cosmetic thing in the vast majority of cases.
