Then you're looking at another $500 or so in wear and maintenance. Figure 850 for the whole experience. 5 track days will not make me faster than supercharger.

Then there's a big question about which is more fun... 5 track days or a supercharger every day? ARGH!
Haha. I do NASA race WEEKENDS for $600 to $800 in my SpecE30, and the closest track to me is 3.5 hours away, most are 6 to 9 hours. You might want to rework that math and it is almost always more cost effective to do a whole weekend versus one day. $500 in wear and maintenance for one day eh.

I was responding to this individual's request. It was a subjective answer to a subjective question based on my own experience in sports cars that I have had the pleasure of owning and tracking. Take it for what it is.

I want to clarify something. A forum member has pointed out that I am not unbiased in my posts and comments about this kit. I never said I was unbiased. Who truly is unbiased? We are all influenced in certain ways. The NDA prevents real numbers (except lap times) from being shared. Talking facts and numbers is the only way to truly be unbiased. All I can give is subjective impressions.

That being said I have had lots of personal contact with this kit and the people involved with it. As such it is the kit I know the most about and have had seat time with on the street and the track.

I am just sharing my experience with the kit (without breaking the NDA) as there is a desire here for subjective impressions on how the kit behaves and "feels"

Have you seen me say "you must get this kit, I am going to get it too!"? No. No one is forcing anyone to buy anything.

Have I been excited about it? Yes! It is an exciting option. I like it. However, I haven't had the chance to try other kits (besides the vortech) but I do plan on getting seat time with a few other kits before I select one for my car.

You have a cheap race car with which I assume you go often. I was driving a 4000lbs BMW 550i on $1500 tires and going out twice a year. Each day on the track took about 25% of the tires' lives. Oil changes were 80 bucks on special. Transmission fluid? Don't even ask. Brake fluid had to be changed before every time because the fluid had absorbed water in between. Stock front pads would die in a single day so I had to put on race pads. Mine were $400+ for a set of PFCs that, judging by wear, could do 5-7 days before wearing down. Granted, I overbrake, especially on those pads that grip so much better. The rotors warped on the very first session and were brand new. They also wear down real quick on that car. I got about 6.5mpg on the track according to the computer. That meant I was really getting more like 5.5mpg. Buying gas at the track is a ripoff, but it supports the track. So track days are cheap?

We are talking about BRZ/FR-Ss though, not boats also called BMW 5 series. Throw some ATE Super Blue and some PFC08s on your BRZ, and I bet the stock tires and brakes last at least 4 weekends. You can get a great set of OEM tire replacements for $500. Fill up your car before the day starts away from the track and then if you need more get some when you go get lunch and then fill up after you leave the track. Or do like I do and bring a couple 5 gallon jugs filled with 91 octane non ethanol fuel. Don't scare the n00bs away from doing track days/weekends. They certainly aren't cheap, but they aren't 5 track days = a supercharger expensive.

OK, so 100 in tires, 50 for hotel, 100 for gas, 75 for brakes, 75 for brake fluid, 75 for oil? So 475 if you skip your differential and transmission changes? I'm assuming someone else does the brake and oil fluid but that you do your own pads. I absolutely hate doing fluids. Such a pain in the ass and so messy. 100 is nice for tires since great road tires will cost more. Track tires more again since you'll need another set of wheels. Oh, forgot the helmet! You want to wear a borrowed one? Blech!

You gotta pay to play. It shouldn't be scary. It's just the truth. Not to mention how much worse it will be once you go FI. Then you'll need brakes and tires more often along with improved cooling and fuel system mods to not suck air below 1/4 tank. Then of course you'll have to think about a big brake kit. The stock brakes are fine, but nothing impressive. A bit soft, and I'd worry about stopping on a track from 130, which only a FI car could hit. Then you'd need motor mounts because of the abuse on track. Actually, people should be scared of track days. They break stuff, especially on partially modded cars.

No reason for people doing track weekends not to be capable of doing their own oil change and brake bleed. Make a friend at the track, and I am sure they will help you do it at the track as well. I will give you:

$100 for tires
$50 for hotel
$100 gas
$12 for a liter of ATE Super Blue and I only bleed each corner before each event, so I use a liter a year
$60 for oil, I don't know what stuff you are using, but over $10 a quart?

I have been running on the same diff and tranny oil for a couple years now. No way you need to be swapping it less than once a year. I agree that it shouldn't be scary and the costs need to be factored in. I tell all my buddies to expect to pay around $600 for a track weekend and plan your track weekends during the year accordingly.

calm down man, this is a car forum, I'm pretty sure everyone here knows that speed cost money. I've known plenty of weekend guys that could get a season out of a set of brake pads. Used R-comps can be had for fairly cheap. Alot of tracks let you camp out at the track which is cheaper and a great way to socialize. The fluids don't need to be changed every track day, yes they should be changed more often, but for the people at the level that your posts are informative to, every 5-6 months would probably be just fine if they're using decent fluids. And a borrowed helmet is just fine if you're still trying things on for size.

Now, can we please get back to the supercharger. Robi, will you have base maps for 91 octane, both intercooled and not, in two weeks?

I'm with you on this. I used to track my S2000 and there wasn't a lot of expense involved. The key is to have a lightweight car, not some overweight beast that burns through consumables. The FRS has larger brakes than an S2000 so I would think that with track pads and aggressive street tires the stock brake hardware should do just fine with around 300 hp. Running R comps changes things a bit but then brings with it all sorts of needed modifications.

Cannot wait for more info on this kit!
