Huge difference.

The problem: Subaru says a valve spring fracture in a very small number of vehicles could lead to engine noise, malfunction,

or, in a worst-case scenario, an engine stalling.
You are misunderstanding the intent of Subaru’s words. Subaru refers to the engine stalling as worst-case scenario due to the safety implications... safety concerns are the cause of a recall to begin with. The engine stalling at an inopportune time can result in an accident, which could be quite catastrophic in and of itself to both the car and the driver. Mechanical damage from broken spring fragments or a valve smacking a piston after the spring breaks can cause an engine to stall and can result in catastrophic engine damage.

I’m assuming this was sarcasm since we already know that only 2013 models are affected

No reflection on the subject, the post-or, or the post-ee - but, I like that line -

ok guy, relax.

Called the Toyota dealership I bought my FR-S from, just to see if perhaps they've gotten notices, and they hadn't even heard of the issue yet... not a good start.

I'm curious how this would be handled. I know the notice says that a broken spring will "worst case" make the engine shut off but we all know that chaos erupts when parts break in the valvetrain. No one can predict what will ultimately happen other than the engine will shut off. If the spring lodged itself the right way it could cause the valve to not open but the cam isn't just going to stop turning so it would probably bend the valves and possibly destroy a rocker. Or another scenario could be the valve is stuck open and smacks a piston. So.... if someone doesn't do the recall and later on has a catastrophic failure (oh sorry, engine shut off), will Subaru/Toyota take care of the work or would it come out of our own pocket?

Anyone know how manufactures have handled situations like this in the past? If I had to guess you would be on your own. The recall letter may even have some legal jargon about not being responsible for problems that arise if the recall is ignored.

Ok guy, I am relaxed... my car is not part of the recall... you were the one panicking. Are you really surprised that your dealership "hasn't heard of the recall" yet? Dealerships rarely have a clue and it's going to take some time for Subaru and Toyota to distribute the information to all of the dealerships and owners. Just "relax guy" until you receive your notice in the mail

Pretty typical, it will take a couple months for info to get out to the dealers, along with notices being sent to the lucky owners.

For a car dealer it's another day at the office. They're not going to say or do anything til instructed.

Currently, my car is not part of the recall, but we all know how recalls start with a limited number of VINs and then tend to proliferate...

That line, reminds me of some lyrics...
