How is a used e46 going to be a better financial decision? Do you know how much maintenance and repairs will be on that car? Lol

Lets see now how do these threads usually go?
Oh ya. Get a S2000 Get a Miata Get a Focus Get a WRX/STi Get a TDI Get a Supra Get whatever car the responder has always wanted If you're bored with it then you are bored with it trade it and move on. Then in 2 years trade that and move on. Keep the cycle going until you either find a car to stick with or wonder where the hell all your money went. Edit: Just noticed the 18 months, 12K thing. Sell it and by a good bicycle and a bus pass. Don't drive enough to worry about it.

Well let's not get all logical here Lone. We all know this is everybody's opportunity to tell the OP to get a car they themselves have never owned/owned but they got rid of/watched in that movie once/played on their racing "simulator"/have looked at 1,000.000,000 times on the internet but never even sat in/etc. practicality and reality be damned get this.

All the guys at work drive much, much, much more expensive fancy cars than a Twin. They always come up to me and ask "so.. get any ladies with that car?" or "nice car dude!"
Who fucking cares if they crack jokes. Let me guess, they drive more "refined" cars - BMW, Audi, Lexus, etc? If you aren't enjoying the car, then sell it. As said above, maintenance on the e46 is going to be worse than the car payment. All up to you on what you want to do since it's your money. |

None of us can tell you what you should do, but I can tell you about my experience.
I drive this car long distances on the highway, as well as around town. I have never tracked it. I do find twisties occasionally, but not enough to make that the primary reason for having it. Even so, I still appreciate the way this thing handles in traffic and around corners in the city. It's more nimble than most cars on the road. It gets great gas mileage. It will carry everything I need for a work trip. And again, I appreciate being able to dodge road debris and assholes without doing damage to my car or myself. I credit this car for keeping me out of the hospital on more than one occasion. I also have two other vehicles, and I rent vehicles at least one week out of every month. So I have something with which to compare. Every time I drive a rental, I am extremely glad to get back into my BRZ when I get home. Driving rentals really drives home the simple reality that most cars just plain suck. That's what I would suggest you do. Go rent something sporty and drive it around town like you normally would. If you don't feel any particular relief to be back in your FR-S afterward, sell it and get something else. Or, if you have the means, buy an E46, alternate driving them for a while and see which one becomes your "go to" vehicle. Then sell the one that you don't need. It shouldn't take more than a few weeks to figure that out. Or, just sell the FR-S, buy something else and see if you're satisfied. If not, go pick up a BRZ. That would give you everything good about the car without the Scion stigma. |

I'm a professional and drive a BRZ. Do not care what others think but when others see the car I always get a very positive comment. I like to be different from the crowd and do not like over paying for something just because of the name plate. Would rather keep my costs done and save the extra cash for the future.
Of note, for fun I just test drove a BMW today at our local dealer. Handling was boring and nothing like the BRZ. It was more in the boat category. The ultimate sailing machine in my opinion. (but the turbo was nice!) |

why ask if you wanna sell it?
Go get a Corolla. Comfy, hitting 45-48mpg on cruise control and 36 city. $300/month i'd just pay it off. I'm at 450/month or so. If I do total it or god forbid lose it, I'd get (would get) a WRX. That's about only other car I can see myself in. Perhaps a mustang v6...but id feel like cr@p driving it. I also badged my Scion as a Toyota and dont ever mention it is a FRS. I call it a Toyota 86 because although not racecar, it's spacecraft to me or rocket. Plus, I like to hit it sideways. Anyway hahaha do what you want. I've decided i'd only trade in for 2nd year model of 2nd generation twin...if and only if 250hp/turbo/FI/V6/whatevers chicken nugget. If the twin doesnt complete you, try a G35/G37 imo BMW.....wouldnt recommend because I dont like them. IMO

It just sounds like you're a typical young adult with some insecurities and priorities to examine.
If your professional life actually involves driving clients and/or being seen in the vehicle that's one thing. Aside from that, true respect comes from not giving a shit about other's petty observations. Maybe you're spending money swapping cars because you're looking for something in the wrong place. Hell you're tracking it so you must be an enthusiast. Driving in a straight line is boring no matter what kind of car it is. It's a great little turismo. Maybe I'm full of shit. What the hell do I know?

You're crazy, as well as any other self proclaimed "CAR enthusiast" that takes brand into consideration when purchasing a car is absolutely bananas.
If you really want to impress your cohorts, you're not doing in an E46. "Why did you buy such an old car?" The fox said. Personally, I love being a mid thirties guy driving around in a young persons' car (Scion). Mostly because I don't give two flying about the rat race that consumes our society. I'm more impressed with the adults who put on their professional garb when its needed, and then have enough of a spine to be who they are, despite what other people think of them. |

I probably "researched" this car for over a year before purchasing it. I test drove it multiple times and had more than enough cash reserves but could never pull the trigger... What I eventually ended up realizing was that the main reason I kept putting off purchasing the car was because I was so concerned with what others would think if I bought the car as an automatic... And god forbid if I went with a Scion instead of a Subaru, I was half-convinced by those around me that the world might end! One day it kind of just hit me though: (1) If I was going to base my car purchase off of what everyone was telling me was best, I was going to end up in another Accord or a luxury vehicle with features I didn't care about for the rest of my life... (2) No matter what car I bought someone would have an issue with my decision ("That car is too slow", "That car is ugly", "Why did you choose that color?", "You should have bought it new!", "You should have bought it used!", "No turbo? LOL!") (3) Given the above... My decision should be based entirely one what gives me the most utility (satisfaction). Different scenario to yours, but once again just trying to hit home how when the light bulb clicks, you're going to look back and laugh at caring so much about what others thought of your car. |
