The owners manual advises not to exceed 4k for the first 1000km.

The 'seal the piston ring' theory was an article written mostly for bike engines.
It's quite the controversial topic. Instead I'd suggest follow the owners manual...

He's talking about the beep/light I think. It's in the owners manual as well :P

Yep, there's a light and a beep you can set (although you won't hear it over the stereo if you turn it on). To set it, press the disp button until you get the screen into the "rev" state. Then hold the same button down to change the values.

Sound system ... and sat nav ... sucks. I agree. I've yet to test what sound quality differences there are [compared to bluetooth] but I'm assuming USB delivers higher fidelity.
Yeah, sound quality when streaming through bluetooth is not meeting my expectations. I wonder whether usb will improve it compared to bluetooth (but I also haven't figured out how to do this yet -- you know the usability of a unit leaves a bit to be desired when you have to turn to a manual). I hope the USB sound quality is superior enough to mean we don't have to change head units, speakers, etc. to get decent sound. But I'm not holding my breath. I've also had a very, very quick play with the EQ settings but also to no avail. It's probably just a case that crap is crap.

It amazes me that car manufacturers still haven't figured out that many customers would be better off if they moved their head unit cost into decent amplifiers and speakers and just provided an ergonomically sensible dock (with connection adapters) for your smartphone along with steering wheel controls. Even tiny alarm clock manufacturers have figured this kind of thing out by now, so it's one of those things you just have to shake your head about, I guess, and factor a re-haul of the audio system into the cost of purchase or accept it how it is. I'll be keeping my eye on the forum to see what alternative units/amps/speakers people suggest. In the meantime I'll keep my fingers crossed the USB connection makes some perceptible difference.

Sure, I can try and do this tomorrow. Which longitudinal section of the car should I be looking? Between the front and rear wheels?

You have your car? Any chance you could post up a scanned image of the text in the owner's manual that denotes this?

I have the next best thing. A pdf of the US BRZs manual

Page 149:
Quote:
New vehicle break-in driving (the first 1000 miles [1600 km])
The performance and long life of your vehicle are dependent on how you handle and care for your vehicle while it is new. Follow these instructions during the first 1000 miles (1600 km):
●Do not allow the engine speed to exceed 4000 rpm except in an emergency.
●Do not drive at one constant engine or vehicle speed for a long time, either fast or slow.
●Avoid starting suddenly and rapid acceleration, except in an emergency.
●Avoid hard braking, except in an emergency.
The same break-in procedures should be applied to an overhauled engine, newly mounted engine or when brake pads or brake linings are replaced with new ones.

Proficience, many thanks for posting that link. I couldn't quickly find it but that's also what I had read prior to purchase.

The local manual doesn't differ on this long and restrictive run-in period. Having to worry about revs whilst driving in the city doesn't feel very safe but it is what it is. There's plenty of controversy and debate about run-in processes elsewhere on the forum. I'm just following the book and using it to inspire me to do lots of driving days and exploit currently low oil prices (sorry ice caps!).

Just went down to the garage to do this but couldn't scope the passenger side properly despite getting my iPhone under there and taking some movies. Sorry mate. FWIW, the driver's side looks covered.

Thanks for the review. Just wondering how you guys are finding the automatic transmission? Did you end up using the paddles?

I prefer the gear stick up/down shifting. It's feels seriously solid when you do it. Better than the Lexus IS250 and my old 08 Lancer.

Are you able look/take pictures under the car to see what the plastic under body covers?

The automatic transmission is greater, shifts really quickly. I havent really used the paddles in full race mode, mainly to drop a gear to overtake. I would say that the paddles don't feel like paddles, more like switches (if you think about range of travel, if that makes sense). I suppose some people could get bothered by that..
