Pretty sure this is a wide double din and not a 1.5 din. People are putting in double din radios and adding kits to make up for the extra space on the sides.

Toyota pretty much never uses 1.5. They used to use standard 1 or 2 DIN, then switched to using 2 DIN mounting, but with a larger (mainly wider) face for it, which is what the FR-S/86 has. It is definitely not 1.5 DIN, and is larger than 2 DIN, but uses 2 DIN mounting bracketry (though with a different offset for the face as well).

It's a 2 DIN. DIN stands for Deutsche Industrie Norm, and references the height only, not the width.

DIN 75490 (later standardized internationally as ISO 7736) references both the height and width, but not the depth. 1 DIN is a 180 x 50 mm panel, 2 DIN is a 180 x 100 mm panel.

Still it doesn't matter, since it is also taller than 2 DIN.

Correct, both have a width of 180 mm, with the only difference the height (1 DIN 50 mm, 2 DIN 100 mm).

Right, but the factory radio is both taller and wider than a 2 DIN.

I've always preferred the Kenwood navigation systems because they use the Garmin Navigation ECU's, which means the Garmin mapping works on them. Garmin is the only ones that are really keeping their Middle East mapping up to date - I'm in Dubai.

Turns out Kenwood has a couple models that are specifically Toyota sized - the one I got was the DDX630WM - combined with the navigation module KNA-G630.

Stock radio:

After installing:

With the Garmin navigation:

Very nice - very factory appearance - so nice to not need the Metra / Scosche style adapters on each side! Also came with a plug and play harness for the Toyota audio connector.

Only thing is the Toyota antenna is a different connector - need an adapter as I'm sure most of you have figured out already.

Will try and get some better pictures for you in daylight

Laurie
Nice ride!! Saw your cars other pictures in the red FRS compilation thread. Unfortunately, I'm unable to see the pics you posted here. Mind re-uploading them?

I work in Dubai as well, my 86 is scheduled for end of July(The wait is killing me!). So to pass this time I do stuff to keep me occupied. And last night I was looking at a similar Kenwood unit at E-max store (in Mirdif City Center). They had the following unit for AED 5400 and no clue how to install it or whether it includes GCC maps at all. I was so disappointed.

I wouldn't mind knowing where you got your Kenwood unit from and for how much? Any separate installation charges? Please share.

Thanks!

Yeah E-max are pretty poorly informed on the Kenwood products and they're not going to help you with installation.

I got mine from Yellowhat at Times Square - and while they can do the installation for you, I actually just did it myself. I've been modifying cars over the past 10 years, and before that I used to help my dad on his car projects, so I know what I'm doing

The head unit was 2400 AED, the separate navigation ECU was 2800 AED. Antenna adaptor BAA44 I think was around 70 AED (but not sure).

The head unit you showed is a standard double din meaning it is narrower so you will have to use an adapter kit and will have blank plastic parts on each side. Look in some other threads of people putting in custom head units and you will see...

As for the pictures, they are displaying fine here. Try holding CTRL while pressing refresh. They are hosted on the same place as my other pictures so if you can see those, there's no reason to not see these.

Yes, I could see the pictures after I refreshed it a few times.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure it will come in handy when I'm looking out to change my radio too.

I believe this is Alpine's attempt to do something similar: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500INEZ....html?tp=20222

It mentions a bezel like most installs need, but I don't believe it requires spacers on the side of the opening and since it's being touted as bigger than usual it implies that it might natively fit openings like Toyota's

Doesn't fit the Scion TC's opening, which I think is the same as the FR-S(could be wrong)
