You need to make sure the car is on a level not just front and back but left to right as well, gas station or some parking lot is USUALLY good, as the side of the street has a dip towards the gutter.

Take a hot reading and take one parked overnight if you have a garage, that should help you understand how much oil is drained back. Usually, it is about 1/8 - 1/4" difference.

You kind of want the cold reading on level surface to be at least above the high dot, obviously. It's all relative as long as you park the car in the same spot, I prefer a hot reading seeing the oil on the top dot.

It's possible factory put in a little more as the engine breaks it the rings may use some oil,

1cm sounds OK, the picture posted look a little high

Anyone thinks this overfilling is related to the idle issue that others are experiencing?

Mine's reading ~ 1/2 pint high as well. Won't know how accurate the dipstick is until refill with correct amount. I'm not concerned enough to to dump the oil before its due.

If it bothers you, and you don't have an oil extractor, you can use a mity vac to suck it out of the dipstick tube.

I checked my oil in the morning while the car was at a slight(3-5 degrees) incline (rear lower than front) after a 200 mile drive at an average speed of 70 mph. The dipstick showed about a half quart low, so I added half a quart. Checking my oil on my return on a flat surface and cold it showed about a half quart high. So it seems like the dipstick is pretty sensitive to being on a flat/inclined surface.

If you overfill an engine with engine oil, it could lead to major damage in the future... you would think it's better than having less, but instead if it's too full the crankshaft will be whipping that extra oil up and cause it to foam...

Foam = fail lubricant...

Now, this applies for traditional Inline/V/W engines, but not sure about horizontally opposed boxers... I would assume the same applies though.

A little overfilled is not a big deal at all. If it's a quart or more overfilled then I would do something about it. I work at toyota and the new prius motor is supposedly sensitive to overfilling because it could effect fuel economy to the point that it will throw a check engine light if it's overfilled. But it takes almost a whole quart overfilled to do that. So I guess I'm trying to say anything under 1/2 a quart over should be nothing to worry about at all. We got a engine that was overfilled in a Camry which caused it to foam but go to find out the customer had poured an extra 3-4 quarts during his DIY oil change.

Well I just sanded mine, and even after I just get out of the car from driving, I can read it with no problems

Defiantly a must for this car! I'll try and post a picture or two later when I get around to it.

Coming from 2 Mini Coopers which had impossible oil dipsticks to read the FRS is ok.

I used to own a BMW E36 M3. That car had some oil pickup problems when run on the track. The poor man's solution was to overfill the oil 1.5 - 2 quarts. Is this happening from the factory here?

The pictures are a little misleading due to the angle. It was really difficult to get the oil on the dipstick to show up at all on the photograph. The oil level is somewhere between 1 cm and 2 cm above the full line on the dipstick. Yes, I did clean the dipstick and re-inserted it before reading the level.

Just slightly over filled is not a bad thing, it might reduce mpg a negligible amount but it wont cause problems. Keep in mind, the more oil, the more ability to suspend and neutralize contaminants. Not a bad thing for a new engine.
