Can anyone enlighten me on this topic? I saw on article on this the other day and these kids were labeled "anti-environmentalists" and "anti-Obama" and their motivation for doing this shit was in protest of some political ideology they didn't support. Is this true?

In my experience it's simply been people being ****s for the "lulz". Whether or not it's politically motivated would depend on the individual.
