Not sure if Mazda will actually have the ND Miata. They have been saying it for years. If they do, I'll be getting one as my DD and a FR-S for track.

There is an article or 2 around that discusses a SkyActiv version of the rotary, I honestly think that IN a miata would be the best bet for Mazda as they need to leave the RX-7 where they left it, the FD is almost too nice of a chassis to follow with anything that isn't alot better, and the market segment wont support what that car would have to cost.

I think Mazda has the highest potential for selling sports cars of all the manufacturers on the market right now. If they stick a new 1.8L or 2.0L SkyActiv-G engine in a new Miata which gets excellent gas mileage and offers much better acceleration than the current and previous models, it will draw a lot of attention.

And then they could make an RX-9 coupe with the new SkyActiv-Rotary engine which will be much more fuel efficient, powerful, reliable, and lighter - doing away with the notorious downsides of the previous rotary engines.

If they were to get these cars right, and sell them at the right price, they will get more sales than ever before I think.

BTW, this thread is in the wrong subforum.

Merge the Miata/MX-5 with the RX-7/RX-8

Mazda will go bankrupt before you see them put out 2 sports cars.

The miata is actually supported by non car people, i.e. women who think its cute. I expect its sales will drop but that is will end up OK.

Mazda has been talking about their goals for the ND and next-gen rotary for awhile now, it seems based on their own goals, not a reaction to the FRS/BRZ.

If you read the announcements about the ND, they have been saying that it will be smaller and lighter than the NC, potentially with a smaller engine.

They've already shown prototypes of the next rotary, called 16X because it is 1.6L. Supposedly it will get more torque and better fuel economy than the Renesis. I doubt we'll see a turbo factory rotary ever again, considering their tendency to overheat or blow apex seals.

chassis codes for the Miata. The Future Miata (ND) is expected to be lighter than the first gen Miata. Which was proposed by Ikudo Maeda cheif Mazda Designer, who want to use the smaller lighter miata platform to serve as a bases for the next gen RX.

Thanks. I was looking at a few different sketches/concept photos. I hope they make a coupe and I really hope they get rid of that stupid "smile" on the front. Even the Mazdaspeed 3 has it.

The stupid smile is part of the Old Nagare Design Language, and has been offically axed from any future Mazda Cars. Replacing it is the Kodo Design Language. Seen from these two videos that showcase the Kodo Design. Which will also make its way into the ND Miata.

I personally dislike the overall design of all the Mazdas.

The last great looking car they had imo was RX7

anyone else think that the Mazda 3 and BRZ's front look similar?

The FD RX-7 looked gorgeous. The FC looked classic. I kind of liked the NB Miata styling too. The RX-8 is kind of cool but not really my thing. It was sort of a mess of shapes and yes, I do not like the big simling faces. I think they should drop that concept/theme.

That reminds me of an old episode of Top Gear when James May says, "You know how the front of the car is like a face and you get a sense that it's smiling?" and Jeremy Clarkson is like, "WTF?" LOL... So maybe some people see it and others don't.
