Does it need to last longer than the warranty? I ask because some folks have mentioned Audi or VW.

What's wrong with the WRX? I actually wouldn't be concerned with ringland on the EJ25 unless you plan on mods, but rather its a lot thirstier for not a whole lot more in performance over the WRX's FA20 DIT. On the 2015s, the WRX IMO is a much better buy with more potential. CTS should be pretty good although I've only driven the first two gens, I heard the ATS is one of the best driving Cadillacs. Infiniti G37s are good all-rounders, although I don't know if the Q50 changed this. If you're more concerned with comfort but still want fun...how about a Hyundai Genesis? Powerful, very comfortable, despite how big it is its drift-able, very well equipped and reasonably well priced. Versus the entry level BMWs, Audis and Mercedes...I thought the big Hyundai was actually a much much better car and surprisingly...more fun which I wasn't expecting.

On the hot hatch front...I frankly couldn't recommend anything. I don't like FWD cars. I sat in the Focus ST and I found the seats intolerable.

Go back and research. Ring land issues on the STI's are rare over the last few years. If you keep the car stock, you have a warranty. If you mod, make sure you do it right.

Nothing is wrong with either WRX or STI. Quit search, you can't find a better car all around at that price.

I've owned an EJ257 STI hatch and mk6 GTI. The powertrain on the GTI (esp the TSI) is more reliable, but both are fine for the most part.
